Diani Beach stretches 17km along the South Coast of Kenya, 35km south of Mombasa across the Likoni Ferry. It’s consistently ranked among Africa’s top beaches — wide white sand, clear turquoise water, and a barrier reef that keeps most of the beach calm and safe for swimming. The accommodation ranges from enormous all-inclusive resorts to quiet private villas and small guesthouses.

Understanding the A14 Highway

One important practical point: the A14 highway runs almost parallel to the beach, separated from it by a strip of hotels, gardens, and vegetation. Most guesthouses and smaller hotels are on the inland side of the highway. To reach the beach from these properties, you cross the A14, which carries trucks, matatus, and speeding vehicles. Crossing it requires care, particularly at night. The main beach resorts are either directly on the beach or have controlled crossing points. This is worth factoring into your accommodation choice.

Luxury (from USD 200–450/night as of 2026)

Almanara Luxury Villas (southern Diani) is the most boutique and exclusive option on Diani. Seven private villas, each with its own plunge pool and garden, set in landscaped grounds leading directly to the beach. A full-time cook, housekeeper, and garden team service each villa. Rates from approximately USD 400/night as of 2026. It’s a self-contained retreat rather than a hotel — suited to couples or small families wanting maximum privacy.

Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa is Diani’s largest five-star property, with over 150 rooms, multiple restaurants, a large pool complex, a full-service spa, and direct beachfront access. Rates from approximately USD 250/night room-only; all-inclusive packages from approximately USD 350/night. The PADI dive school on site is one of the most active on the South Coast.

Baobab Beach Resort and Spa is another large full-service resort in northern Diani, from approximately USD 220/night room-only. The beach section here is wide and the resort has a watersports centre. Popular with package tour operators from Europe.

Mid-Range (KES 15,000–30,000/night as of 2026)

Leopard Beach Resort and Spa (central Diani) is one of Diani’s most consistently well-reviewed mid-range properties. Lush tropical gardens, direct beach access, and a well-maintained pool area. Rooms from approximately KES 20,000/night. The PADI dive school at Leopard Beach is the most established on Diani.

Southern Palms Beach Resort (northern Diani) is a sprawling resort popular with families and groups. It has one of the largest pool areas on the South Coast and a wide beach section. Room-only from approximately KES 18,000/night; all-inclusive from approximately KES 25,000/night. The rooms are not as polished as Leopard Beach but the facilities are extensive.

Jacaranda Beach Resort (central Diani) is a comfortable mid-range option from approximately KES 16,000/night. The gardens are well maintained and the beach access is directly managed by the resort — no highway crossing required.

Budget (KES 5,000–12,000/night as of 2026)

Diani Sea Lodge (northern Diani) is on the inland side of the highway but the beach is a short crossing away. Rooms from approximately KES 7,000/night. Straightforward accommodation without frills, clean and secure.

Beach Bar and Guesthouse (Diani town area) is a small, informal guesthouse from approximately KES 5,000/night. Popular with backpackers and independent travellers. The bar on site is lively in the evenings.

Diani Backpackers (off Diani Beach Road) is one of the cheapest options in the area, from approximately KES 2,500/night for a dorm bed. Private rooms from approximately KES 6,000/night. Good for meeting other independent travellers and sharing transport costs.

Villas and Self-Catering

Diani has a large market for privately rented villas, particularly among families and groups. Search platforms like Airbnb and Diani Real Estate (a local agency) list properties from approximately KES 15,000 to KES 100,000/night depending on size and beachfront position. A 3-bedroom private villa for 6 people near the beach works out cheaper per person than an equivalent resort stay, particularly for groups.

Booking Tips

Peak season: December–January and July–August are the busiest periods. Diani Reef, Leopard Beach, and Almanara fill early. Book 2–3 months ahead for December.

Package deals: European tour operators (TUI, Thomas Cook, Jet2) offer competitive all-inclusive packages to the large Diani resorts. If you want a pure beach holiday with no planning, these can represent better value than booking independently.

Direct booking discounts: Most resorts offer 5–15% discounts for direct bookings versus third-party platforms. Call the hotel directly.
