Wildlife & Safari
Kenya is one of the world's premier safari destinations. From the Maasai Mara's annual wildebeest migration to Amboseli's elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro, we cover every major park and reserve with practical guides on when to go, where to stay, and what to budget.
Kenya has more than 50 national parks and reserves, but seven account for most first-time and repeat safari visits. Each suits a different kind of trip - and choosing the right combination matters more than most planning guides admit.
The Mara is Kenya's flagship reserve and justifiably so - resident lion, leopard, cheetah, and elephant year-round, plus the Great Migration crossings from late July through October. Non-resident entry fee: USD 80 per adult per day (2025). The conservancies bordering the reserve (Olare Motorogi, Mara North, Naboisho) charge higher fees but permit off-road driving and night drives that the main reserve doesn't. See our full Maasai Mara guide and Maasai Mara safari cost breakdown.
Amboseli delivers the most iconic wildlife photograph in Africa: large-tusked elephants crossing a dried lake bed with Kilimanjaro filling the sky behind them. The park holds roughly 1,600 elephants and is the best place in Kenya for close elephant encounters on foot (permitted in the swamp margins with a ranger). Entry fee: USD 60 per adult per day. Combination trips pairing Amboseli with Tsavo East or West are popular from Mombasa. See our Amboseli cost guide for lodge and camping options from USD 50 to USD 900 per night.
Together the largest protected area in Kenya - roughly 21,000 km². Tsavo East is flatter and drier, famous for red-dust elephants and the Mudanda Rock water point. Tsavo West is greener, with the Mzima Springs (hippo and crocodile underwater viewing) and lava fields. Entry fee: USD 52 per adult per day. Self-drive access from Mombasa makes Tsavo one of the more affordable options; the drive is 3–4 hours. See the Tsavo cost guide for options under USD 150 per person per night.
Compact and easy to combine with the Mara - most drivers do Nakuru as a half-day stop on the Nairobi–Mara road. Rhino sanctuary: white and black rhino populations are among the most reliably spotted in East Africa. Flamingo numbers fluctuate with water levels but you'll see thousands even in lean years. Entry: USD 60 per adult per day. Excellent for first-time visitors who want to tick a lot of species quickly.
Northern Kenya's standout reserve, about 350 km from Nairobi. Samburu harbours the "Samburu Special Five" - Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and beisa oryx - species you won't find in the southern parks. The Ewaso Ng'iro river running through the reserve makes for reliable lion and leopard sightings. Bush camps here tend to be smaller and less crowded than the Mara. See our full Samburu guide.
A private conservancy near Nanyuki, at the foot of Mount Kenya. Home to the last two northern white rhinos on earth (non-breeding, now elderly), plus substantial populations of southern white and black rhino, cheetah, and all five Big Five. Night drives are permitted. Entry fee: approximately USD 115 per adult per day, which includes the conservancy levy. Easily combined with Mount Kenya for a wildlife-and-trekking circuit.
The only national park on earth bordering a capital city. Black rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo, and hundreds of bird species 7 km from Nairobi's CBD. Entry fee: USD 60 per adult per day. Useful for travellers with a short stopover or a final morning before a flight - the main gate is 10 km from JKIA. Morning drives typically start at 6:30 am and finish by 9 am.
Kenya has two distinct dry seasons - the short dry spell from January to March, and the main dry season from June to October. Both produce excellent game viewing as animals concentrate around water sources. See our month-by-month Kenya wildlife calendar for a full breakdown.

Kenya safari costs span an enormous range. A self-drive Tsavo trip with KWS banda accommodation costs from USD 80 per person per night all-in. A fly-in private conservancy camp in the Mara can cost USD 1,200 per person per night. The factors that move the needle most are: fly vs drive, peak vs shoulder season, private conservancy vs national park, and group vs private vehicle.
Our detailed cost guides break down the numbers for each park: Maasai Mara | Amboseli | Tsavo.
As a rough guide: budget safaris using shared vehicles and camping or KWS bandas run USD 200–350 per person per day all-in. Mid-range lodges in the national parks run USD 350–700. The private conservancies and premium camps - Angama Mara, Mahali Mzuri, Kicheche - run USD 700–1,500+ per person per night.
For a comprehensive cost breakdown across accommodation, park fees, transport, and tips, see our Kenya safari planning guide.
Kenya's wildlife doesn't stop at the Mara fence. The Aberdare National Park has mountain forest leopard and the rare bongo antelope. Hell's Gate near Naivasha is one of very few parks where you can cycle or walk among zebra and giraffe without a vehicle. The Great Rift Valley itself - the geological fracture running through western Kenya - contains a string of soda lakes (Bogoria, Baringo, Elementaita, Naivasha) each with distinct bird and mammal populations.
For something truly off the beaten track, Lake Turkana in the northern desert is the world's largest alkaline lake - crocodile-dense shores, Nile perch fishing, and one of Africa's most dramatic landscapes. Reaching it requires a 4WD or a charter flight.
We also cover the Big Five in Kenya - where to find each species reliably, how behaviour changes by season, and which parks give the best photographic positions.
