Hell's Gate National Park: Cycling and Rock Climbing Guide
Hell’s Gate National Park is unlike any other in Kenya. It is one of only two Kenyan parks (the other being Saiwa Swamp) where walking and cycling are permitted freely among the wildlife. The result is a uniquely intimate wildlife experience — cycling past zebras and giraffes is a morning well spent.
The park covers 68km² in the Rift Valley adjacent to Lake Naivasha, about 90km from Nairobi. It is named for a narrow break in the valley wall where geothermal steam vents and hot springs erupt. The landscape inspired the setting for Disney’s The Lion King.
Getting There
From Nairobi: 90km northwest via the Nairobi–Nakuru highway (Naivasha exit). Approximately 1.5 hours by car. Public transport: matatu from Nairobi to Naivasha town (KES 150–200, 1.5 hours), then a taxi or boda-boda to the Elsa Gate (approximately KES 500–700).
From Lake Naivasha: The park is 2km from Naivasha town. Most Lake Naivasha accommodation can arrange transport.
Cycling the Park
Bicycle hire at Elsa Gate: approximately KES 300–500 per hour. The main circuit road runs 22km through the park. The cycling terrain is flat and manageable.
Wildlife along the route: Zebras, buffalos, Maasai giraffe, Thomson’s gazelles, impalas, and hartebeest are common. Baboons and vervet monkeys in the fig trees. No lions or elephants in Hell’s Gate (the open landscape and cycling access would be incompatible with large predators).
The Gorge Walk
The gorge is the most dramatic feature of the park. A trail leads from the main park road down into the narrow canyon — the walls rise 30–40m in places, with geothermal steam vents and hot springs at the bottom.
Guided walks: Mandatory guide from the gorge entrance (approximately KES 800–1,500 per group). The full gorge walk takes 2–3 hours. Wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet. The path involves some scrambling — not suitable for people with mobility difficulties.
At the exit of the gorge, the Olkaria Geothermal Spa offers hot spring pools for soaking after the walk (approximately KES 1,500 entry). Bring a towel.
Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower
Two volcanic pillars (Fischer’s Tower at 25m, Central Tower at 15m) are popular rock climbing sites. The rock is trachyte — solid and well-featured. A trad climbing guide from the gate can be arranged for experienced climbers (approximately KES 2,000–3,000/day). Basic routes start at British Very Difficult grade.
Entry Fees
Approximately USD 26 per adult non-resident per day as of 2026. Bicycle hire is additional. Guide fees for the gorge are mandatory and extra.
Where to Stay
Hell’s Gate itself has no lodges — the park is a day trip destination. Lake Naivasha has several accommodation options at various budgets:
- Camp Carnelley’s (budget camping on the lake shore, from KES 2,000/night)
- Lake Naivasha Country Club (mid-range, from KES 12,000/night)
- Crater Lake Tented Camp (upmarket, from KES 25,000/night)
Combining with Lake Naivasha
Crescent Island on Lake Naivasha (boat access from Hippo Point, approximately KES 1,500) offers a walking safari with giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest — no fencing, no vehicles. A natural pairing with a Hell’s Gate visit.
The Geothermal Landscape
Hell’s Gate sits directly above the Olkaria geothermal field — one of the most active geothermal zones in East Africa. Kenya generates approximately 40% of its electricity from geothermal sources at the Olkaria Power Station, visible from within the park. The landscape is volcanic: the valley floor is strewn with lava fields, and the steep valley walls are rhyolite and trachyte columns formed by ancient eruptions.
The geothermal activity makes the gorge experience unique — hot springs along the gorge floor maintain year-round warmth, steam vents hiss between the rocks, and the air smells faintly of sulfur. The geological forces that shaped the gorge are still active.
Olkaria Geothermal Spa: The hot spring baths at the spa entrance (approximately KES 1,500/person as of 2026) are heated by the same geothermal water that runs through the gorge. Multiple pools at different temperatures. Open daily 8am–5pm. Towel hire approximately KES 200.
Birdwatching at Hell’s Gate
Over 100 bird species have been recorded. The most notable: Verreaux’s eagle (the large black eagle that specialises in rock hyrax prey — look for them along the cliffs). Augur buzzards, lammergeiers, and various raptors use the cliff thermals. African fish eagles are common near the lake boundary.
The fig trees along the main road attract weavers, sunbirds, and hornbills in numbers. Ostriches are regularly seen on the open plains in the eastern section.
Practical Tips
Best time to visit: Early morning (gate opens 6am). The 6–9am window is best for cycling — wildlife is active, temperatures are cool (15–18°C), and the light is good for photography. By midday the plains are hot and animals have moved to shade.
What to bring: Cycling gloves (the bike handles can be rough), closed-toe shoes for the gorge walk, a small daypack with water and snacks, swimwear for the geothermal spa. The gorge walk can get your feet wet.
Self-guided vs guided: The cycling circuit is self-guided and straightforward. The gorge walk requires a mandatory guide (arranged at the gorge entrance, not the main gate). The guide fee is typically KES 800–1,500 for the group — reasonable for the route complexity and geological commentary.
Day trip from Nairobi: A Hell’s Gate day trip works well with an early start. Depart Nairobi 6:30am, arrive 8am, cycle 8–11am, gorge walk 11am–1pm, Olkaria Spa 1–2:30pm, return Nairobi by 4pm. Alternatively, stay overnight at a Lake Naivasha property and visit Hell’s Gate on the return day.
