Kisumu is Kenya’s third-largest city and the principal port on Lake Victoria, sitting 340km west of Nairobi. As the gateway to the lake, the Kakamega Forest, and the Luo heartland of western Kenya, it draws a wide range of travellers. The road is long but well-covered by coach services, and the domestic flight option makes Kisumu one of the more accessible regional cities in Kenya.

This guide is part of our Kisumu travel guide; for the rest of your planning, see our guides to where to stay in Kisumu and things to do in Kisumu.

By Long-Distance Bus from Nairobi

Modern Coast, Easy Coach, Guardian Coach, and Eldoret Express all run Nairobi–Kisumu services. Both daytime and overnight coaches are available. The overnight departure (typically 8–10pm from Nairobi) is particularly popular - you arrive in Kisumu in the early morning without spending the day on the road.

Departures are mainly from the Machakos Bus Station area in Nairobi. Easy Coach operates from its own terminal. Fares run approximately KES 800–1,200 one way as of 2026. Book ahead for Friday evening and Sunday departures, which fill quickly.

Journey time is approximately 6 to 7 hours by the standard A104 route via Nakuru and Kericho. The road is in generally good condition, with some slower stretches through the tea estates around Kericho. Buses stop briefly in Nakuru and Kericho for food and facilities.

By Matatu from Nairobi

Direct Nairobi–Kisumu matatus operate but the more common approach is to travel in stages:

  1. Nairobi to Nakuru - approximately 2.5 hours, KES 350–500
  2. Nakuru to Kisumu - approximately 3.5–4 hours, KES 400–600

Matatu travellers changing in Nakuru have frequent onward options throughout the day. This staged approach adds flexibility but extends total travel time.

Matatus to Kisumu also depart from Westlands in Nairobi - check at the stage for current departure points as these change.

By Air from Nairobi

Kisumu International Airport (IATA: KIS) is approximately 5km east of the city centre. It is Kenya’s third-busiest airport and receives regular domestic flights from JKIA and Wilson Airport.

Kenya Airways, Jambojet, and Safarilink all operate the Nairobi–Kisumu route. Kenya Airways flies from JKIA; Jambojet and Safarilink fly from JKIA and Wilson. Flight time is approximately 45–55 minutes. Fares range from around USD 40 on Jambojet’s cheapest fares to USD 120+ on peak travel dates with Kenya Airways.

Taxis from the airport to the city centre take about 10–15 minutes and cost approximately KES 500–800. Boda bodas are available but not recommended for long transfers from the airport.

Flying is the obvious choice for anyone with time constraints or who is arriving on an international flight with a Kisumu connection.

From Uganda and Tanzania

Kisumu’s lakeside position makes it a hub for travellers arriving from East Africa’s neighbouring countries, though direct land crossings are not always the most efficient.

From Uganda, the most practical overland route comes via Malaba or Busia border crossings into western Kenya, then matatu or coach to Kisumu. From Busia to Kisumu is approximately 110km - about 2 hours by matatu. Kampala–Kisumu coaches run this route (approximately 7–8 hours total).

From Tanzania, ferries historically ran on Lake Victoria but scheduled passenger services have been inconsistent. Check current availability locally. The overland route via Namanga border is significantly longer.

From Eldoret

Eldoret and Kisumu are approximately 175km apart. Matatus and coaches cover this route in about 2.5 to 3 hours along the A104. Easy Coach and Modern Coast both serve this corridor. Fares are around KES 400–600.

Arriving in Kisumu

Long-distance buses and coaches arrive at the Kisumu Bus Terminal near the central market area. From here, tuk-tuks, boda bodas, and taxis serve the entire city.

Kisumu’s lakeside area (Dunga Beach, Hippo Point) and the market are both within easy reach of the terminal. The city has good banking infrastructure, well-stocked supermarkets, and several fuel stations. Kisumu is the main supply point for western Kenya - stock up here before heading to more remote areas like the Kakamega Forest or the Lake Victoria islands.

Where to Stay in Kisumu

Arriving after a long journey is easier with a bed already booked. Compare hotels in Kisumu on Booking.com and check recent guest reviews before you travel.
