Machakos Highlands Hotel

A mid-budget option in the town centre, the Highlands Hotel is practical rather than characterful. Rooms run approximately KES 2,000–4,000 per night as of 2026. There is a restaurant serving Kenyan dishes and a bar. No pool.

This is the right choice for travellers who need a clean, functional overnight stop without the price tag of the Country Lodge — those driving the Mombasa road who want to break the journey, or business travellers visiting Machakos County offices.

The location is convenient for the main market and town-centre restaurants.

Budget Guesthouses

Several budget guesthouses operate in and around Machakos town centre, charging KES 1,000–2,500 per night as of 2026. These are basic by any standard: small rooms, shared or private bathrooms, intermittent hot water. They serve the local commercial traveller market — teachers, NGO fieldworkers, and traders.

One reliable approach: ask your matatu driver or the local boda-boda riders near the bus stage. They know which guesthouses are currently clean and which are not. Standards shift.
