Wildebeest Migration: Masai Mara River Crossings

The wildebeest migration is the largest overland wildlife movement on earth. Each year, roughly 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, travel in a clockwise loop between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara following the rains and fresh grass. The river crossings at the Mara River are the spectacle most visitors come to witness.

When the crossings happen

The herds typically enter the Masai Mara from late June through July and remain until late October before crossing back south. River crossings happen when the herds have massed on one bank and the instinct to move overrides hesitation. There is no fixed schedule - crossings can occur multiple times a day during peak weeks or go quiet for days. The period from mid-July to September generally offers the highest frequency of crossings.

What to expect at the river

The Mara River crossings are chaotic, loud, and genuinely unpredictable. Thousands of wildebeest funnel to the bank, mill around in apparent confusion, then suddenly surge into the water en masse. Nile crocodiles wait below the surface. The scramble up the far bank sends mud and animals in every direction. Most crossings last 15 to 30 minutes. Some attempts stall and the herd retreats, only to try again hours later.

We recommend arriving at a crossing point early morning and staying patient. Guides track herd movements by radio, and the better-organised camps coordinate information on likely crossing locations for the day.

Where to base yourself

Triangle camps along the Mara River give the closest access to crossing points. The Mara Triangle (west bank) tends to be less crowded than the central Masai Mara National Reserve. Private conservancies bordering the reserve offer off-road driving and night game drives that are not permitted inside the national park.

• Vehicle limits: Popular crossing points attract multiple vehicles; the more remote Triangle crossings often have fewer crowds
• Accommodation: Book camps 6 to 12 months ahead for July and August - peak season fills fast
• Getting there: Light aircraft from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Mara airstrips takes around 45 minutes; road from Nairobi takes 5 to 6 hours

The migration is a natural event, not a guaranteed show. We recommend staying at least three nights to improve the chances of witnessing a crossing. Even without a crossing, the sheer density of wildlife in the Mara during migration season makes any game drive exceptional.
