Amboseli National Park sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro on Kenya’s southern border, approximately 240km southwest of Nairobi. It is one of Kenya’s most iconic safari parks - famous for its large elephant herds and unobstructed views of Kilimanjaro on clear days. There is no practical public transport into the park; virtually all visitors arrive by organised shuttle, private safari vehicle, or light aircraft.
This guide is part of our Amboseli travel guide, which pulls the wider trip together.
By Safari Shuttle from Nairobi
Scheduled safari shuttles are the standard option for travellers without a private 4WD. Several operators run daily or near-daily transfers from Nairobi to Amboseli:
Safarilink’s ground shuttle service, Tembea Africa, and various Nairobi-based tour operators run shared transfers to the main lodge and camp areas. Journey time from Nairobi to Amboseli is approximately 4–5 hours depending on road conditions and which gate you’re using (Meshanani via Namanga; Kimana or Iremito via Emali).
Many camps and lodges at Amboseli offer their own included transfers as part of a full-board package - check with your accommodation before booking a separate shuttle. For budget travellers, joining a shared shuttle through a tour operator is typically USD 30–70 per person one way, depending on the operator.
By Self-Drive Vehicle
Self-drive is practical for travellers with their own 4WD or a hired vehicle. The route from Nairobi:
- Take the A104 southwest through Athi River and Kajiado
- Continue to Namanga (approximately 165km from Nairobi, about 2.5 hours on reasonable tarmac)
- Just before the Namanga border post, turn onto the C103 (about 45km, 1-1.5 hours) to Meshanani Gate, the usual entrance on this route
The C103 past Namanga is rough and dusty - a standard 4WD is strongly recommended. A regular saloon car is not suitable for park roads or sections of the approach. A 2WD may manage in dry conditions but will struggle after rains.
Car hire from Nairobi: operators including Hertz Kenya, Budget Kenya, and local operators on Haile Selassie Avenue offer 4WDs from approximately USD 80–120 per day for a basic Suzuki Jimny or similar.
Pack sufficient water and fuel - the nearest petrol station to the park is in Namanga.
By Light Aircraft from Nairobi
Flying is the most comfortable and time-efficient option, particularly for travellers on shorter safaris.
Safarilink, Air Kenya, and Skyward Express operate scheduled flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Amboseli Airstrip. Flight time is approximately 45–55 minutes. Fares start at around USD 120–150 one way on the scheduled services; costs rise during peak season.
Most lodge packages include an airstrip transfer - your vehicle meets you on landing. Amboseli Airstrip is within the park boundary, making the transition to game viewing seamless.
Wilson Airport is 6km south of Nairobi CBD - allow 30–45 minutes from the city centre.
From Mombasa and the Coast
Travellers coming from the coast most commonly fly or combine:
Option 1: Fly Mombasa–Nairobi (1 hour) and then use shuttle or aircraft onwards. One-day turnaround from the coast is possible with an early flight.
Option 2: Self-drive the coastal to Nairobi route (via JKIA) and then continue southwest on the A104 to Amboseli the same day (long but doable with a 4WD).
Option 3: A few operators run Mombasa–Amboseli direct safari routes for multi-day itineraries combining the coast and the park. Ask Nairobi-based tour operators about this circuit.
Arriving at Amboseli
There is no town at Amboseli - accommodation is exclusively within the park ecosystem (lodges, tented camps, and budget campsites). Meshanani Gate on the western side is the main entrance for the Namanga route. Kimana Gate (east) and Iremito Gate (southeast) are reached from Emali via the Emali-Loitokitok road, which is paved as far as Kimana.
Camp and lodge receptions handle all check-in logistics. If you’re on a shuttle transfer, the driver will know which camp you’re booked at. If flying, your camp will have sent a vehicle to the airstrip.
Important: Amboseli park entry fees are paid at the gate and are separate from accommodation costs - as of 2026, non-resident adult entry is approximately USD 90 per person per 24 hours, paid via the eCitizen system (online or at gate via card).
