Kitale is a working market town rather than a tourist hub, and its accommodation reflects that. Options range from mid-range town-centre hotels to no-frills guesthouses serving the commercial trade passing through Trans-Nzoia County. The town makes an entirely adequate base for Mount Elgon National Park (Chorlim Gate is 14km northeast) and Saiwa Swamp National Park (18km north). Most travellers stay one or two nights.

Choosing Where to Stay
The practical question for most visitors is whether to stay in town or at the park. The short answer is town - there is very little formal accommodation at either park, and Kitale has enough options to suit different budgets. Chorlim Gate for Mount Elgon is a 20-minute drive from central Kitale on a passable road. Even early morning park entry is achievable with a town hotel as your base.
The exception is for multi-day summit trekkers, who will need to camp inside the park. That is a different logistical situation covered below.
Mid-Range Town Hotels
Aturukan Hotel and Villa Serene Hotel are two of the properties listed for Kitale on Booking.com. Expect rooms of the standard Kenyan mid-range type: private bathroom with hot water, breakfast available on site, secure parking and a restaurant serving ugali, nyama choma, chicken and rice dishes. Rates in this bracket generally run approximately KES 5,000-10,000/night (roughly US$38-77 as of 2026), though they vary by season and room type, so check the live price before you commit.
When comparing properties, prioritise three things: a central location close to the bus stages if you are travelling by public transport, secure parking if you have a hire car, and recent guest reviews that mention water pressure and noise. Kitale is quiet at night, but weekend events at some venues can carry.
Mid-range hotels suit travellers passing through quickly - those stopping overnight between Kakamega (80km south) and the Uganda border at Malaba (70km west), for instance.
Budget Guesthouses
Kitale has a number of budget guesthouses in the town centre, with basic rooms at approximately KES 2,000-4,000/night (US$15-31 as of 2026). They are clean and secure at the better end, with the minimal facilities typical of Kenyan budget town hotels - cold or lukewarm water, simple breakfasts, and proximity to the town’s bus stages and market.
These serve the commercial travellers and traders who move through Trans-Nzoia rather than international visitors. They are entirely functional if your requirements are a bed, a lock on the door, and a cheap departure point for an early morning park trip. Look at recent reviews and book online rather than at the door.
Camping at Mount Elgon
For trekkers doing the multi-day summit route, Kenya Wildlife Service maintains designated campsites inside Mount Elgon National Park at various elevations. These are basic - cleared ground, a drop toilet if you are fortunate, no facilities beyond that. You need to carry all food, water, and camping equipment. Camping fees are arranged at Chorlim Gate alongside the daily park entry (approximately USD 30/day as of 2026).
A public campsite outside the gate area is occasionally available for budget travellers who want to start their day hike as early as possible without driving from Kitale. Facilities are minimal.
Staying Near Saiwa Swamp
Saiwa Swamp National Park has no formal accommodation at the gate. Most visitors drive from Kitale (18km, around 30 minutes on the murram road) and return to town the same day. The park opens at 6am and the earliest morning hours - when sitatunga are most active near the swamp margins - are the most rewarding. An early departure from a Kitale hotel puts you at the park gate comfortably.

Uganda Border Stopover
Travellers crossing to Uganda at Malaba (70km west of Kitale) sometimes overnight in Kitale rather than rush the border crossing. The Malaba crossing is open 24 hours but border formalities run more smoothly in daylight hours. Arriving in Kitale by mid-afternoon, staying in a town-centre hotel, and departing for the border by 8am the following morning is a practical itinerary. From Eldoret (60km south), both cities are manageable if you prefer a larger town’s options before the crossing.
