Best Hotels in Nyeri: Where to Stay Near the Aberdares and Mount Kenya

Nyeri’s accommodation options are anchored by three distinct types: the colonial-era hotels used as staging posts for Aberdare lodge visits, mid-range town hotels for business and tourist travellers, and the game-viewing lodges inside Aberdare National Park itself. The town is compact enough that staying anywhere within the centre puts you within 15 minutes of the road to the park.

Aberdare Lodges

Treetops Lodge

Location: Inside Aberdare National Park, accessed via Outspan Hotel in Nyeri

Treetops is historically the most famous wildlife lodge in Africa — the original was built in 1932 and Queen Elizabeth II was staying there when she acceded to the throne in 1952. The current building is the third generation on the same site, rebuilt over the decades. The lodge sits on stilts above a floodlit waterhole and swamp that attracts elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and forest hog through the night. Guests are woken via a buzzer system when significant animals appear. The lodge holds around 50 guests. Access is exclusively via the Outspan Hotel in Nyeri — guests check in at Outspan, lunch, then transfer to Treetops for the afternoon session and overnight. The experience is distinctive and genuinely different from any open-savanna lodge.

The Ark Lodge

Location: Inside Aberdare National Park, accessed via Aberdare Country Club

The Ark is the second of the two Aberdare game-viewing lodges, with its own floodlit waterhole and a multi-deck structure that gives excellent sightlines. The waterhole configuration at The Ark often sees more active nocturnal wildlife than Treetops depending on the season. Access via Aberdare Country Club, which sits 25km south of Nyeri on the Nyeri–Nairobi road. The Country Club itself has rooms and facilities if you want an extra night without paying the park lodge rate.

Nyeri Town

Outspan Hotel

Location: Baden-Powell Road, Nyeri town

The Outspan is the colonial-era property where visitors to Treetops stage their trip. The 46 rooms are in a well-maintained colonial building with a large garden, croquet lawn, swimming pool, and the Baden-Powell cottage on site. Even visitors not accessing Treetops find the Outspan worth staying at for its character and quality — rooms are comfortable, the dining room is reliable, and the garden setting is peaceful. Breakfast is included.

White Rhino Hotel

Price: From approximately KES 7,000–13,000 per night (as of 2026)
Location: Kimathi Way, Nyeri town centre

A solid mid-range town hotel that is the most practical choice for travellers passing through or doing day trips to the Aberdares. The 35 rooms have air conditioning (useful even at altitude given the midday sun), satellite TV, and reliable hot water. The in-house restaurant does a good buffet lunch and is popular with Nyeri business visitors. The hotel can arrange 4WD hire for Aberdare National Park at approximately KES 7,000–12,000 per day.

Central Hotel Nyeri

Price: From approximately KES 5,000–10,000 per night (as of 2026)
Location: Town centre, near the bus stage

The Central Hotel has been a Nyeri fixture for decades and occupies a central location convenient for the matatu stage and market. Rooms are clean and functional; some rooms have balconies overlooking the main street. The restaurant serves Kenyan staples from 7am. The hotel is the best mid-range value in town for independent travellers who don’t need resort-level facilities.

Budget

Holiday Inn Nyeri (Not to Confuse with the Chain)

Price: From approximately KES 2,500–5,000 per night (as of 2026)
Location: Town centre, near the market

A small local guesthouse with no connection to the international Holiday Inn chain. Clean basic rooms with en-suite bathrooms and ceiling fans. The downstairs restaurant serves chai and mandazi from 6:30am. Suitable for travellers on a tight budget who need a clean bed close to the bus stage for early departures to Nairobi or Nanyuki.
