Wildebeest crossings of the Mara River — the defining spectacle of the migration — are not predictable to the hour, but scouts working the Mara Triangle and the Masai Mara National Reserve proper are now tracking herds that have committed to the northern move. Once herds consolidate at the riverbank, a crossing can happen within minutes or after hours of milling behaviour. The unpredictability is part of what makes the experience genuinely exciting rather than a choreographed show.
Current reports indicate multiple crossing sites are active, including some of the classic spots in the Mara Triangle where the river bends create natural gathering points. Crocodile activity is high, as it typically is once the season begins and the reptiles associate river crossings with feeding opportunities.
The Season Timeline
The peak crossing period typically runs from mid-July through September, with the largest herds often concentrated at river crossing points in August. The wildebeest are followed by zebra — which often cross more readily than wildebeest — and by the lions, cheetahs, and hyenas that follow the herds north.
The migration remains in the Mara ecosystem until the short rains push the herds south again, usually in October or November.
