Kenya Screens Over 77,000 Arrivals as Ebola Preparedness Tightens

Kenya has screened more than 77,000 international travellers at airports, seaports and land border crossings since the beginning of June 2026, with 37 individuals currently in precautionary quarantine as part of enhanced Ebola preparedness measures. The Kenya National Public Health Institute confirmed that no Ebola cases have been detected on Kenyan soil; the screening programme is a precautionary response to an active outbreak affecting neighbouring countries in Central and East Africa.

Health officers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi and Moi International Airport in Mombasa are conducting risk assessment checks on all arriving passengers, focusing particularly on those travelling from or through the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan. Travellers arriving from these three countries should expect a short face-to-face health assessment at a designated screening station before proceeding to immigration. All four of Kenya’s national reference laboratories are operating around the clock to support rapid Ebola testing capacity.

For the vast majority of international visitors — those arriving from Europe, North America, Asia or other parts of Africa — the screening adds only a few additional minutes to the arrival process. Travellers are asked to complete a health declaration on arrival and to flag any recent symptoms including fever, fatigue or unexplained bleeding. Kenya’s Ministry of Health has deployed additional staff to entry points to keep processing times manageable despite the increased protocols.

The screening measures do not affect any tourist destinations or safari circuits within Kenya. Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo and the Kenyan coast remain fully open and operating normally. Visitors currently planning safari itineraries should note that the Kenya coast and northern conservancies are unaffected by any health-related travel restrictions.
