Things to Do in Nakuru: Lake, Rhinos, and Rift Valley Views

Nakuru is Kenya’s fourth-largest city, sitting in the floor of the Rift Valley at 1,850m above sea level. The city itself is a busy commercial hub, but the main draw is Lake Nakuru National Park — a compact, fenced reserve 5km from the city centre that holds some of East Africa’s most reliable rhino viewing alongside flamingos, lions, leopards, and a concentrated ecosystem that can be seen in a single day.

Wildlife Drives

The park covers 188 square kilometres and is fully fenced — a conservation decision that makes it one of Kenya’s safest parks for black and white rhinos. For full details, see our Lake Nakuru National Park guide. The rhino sanctuary section in the south of the park holds a significant population: sightings within a couple of hours of entry are common. The Lake Nakuru circuit, around the lake’s northern shore, produces flamingo concentrations when water levels are high, plus waterbuck, buffalo, baboons, and impala. The acacia forest section on the eastern shore is productive for leopard sightings, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon. A complete circuit takes 3–4 hours by vehicle.

Guided game drives from operators in Nakuru town run approximately KES 4,000–8,000 per person in addition to park fees, using 4x4 vehicles with open roofs. Baboon Cliff Viewpoint

A viewpoint on the western escarpment above the lake provides one of the Rift Valley’s best panoramic views — the lake, flamingo flocks, and the escarpment wall on the far side visible simultaneously. The name comes from the resident olive baboon troops. This is a stop on any standard park circuit and takes 15–20 minutes.

Lion Hill Viewpoint

Location: Northern section of the park

A second elevated viewpoint overlooking the lake from the north, with views across to the Mau Escarpment and Menengai Crater (visible in the distance). The hill section is productive for spotting lions resting in the acacia trees below the ridge.

Menengai is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas — the crater floor is 90 square kilometres and drops approximately 500m below the rim. The viewpoint on the northern rim is reached by a road from Nakuru town (about 20 minutes by taxi, KES 500–800 return). The geothermal steam vents visible in the crater floor are part of Kenya’s geothermal energy infrastructure. Walking on the crater rim is possible on marked paths; the full rim circuit takes around 2 hours on foot.

Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site

Location: 4km east of Nakuru city centre

An archaeological site occupied from Neolithic times through the Iron Age. The site contains pit dwellings, burial mounds, and the remains of a Kenya Capsian settlement dated to approximately 3,000 BC. The small on-site museum explains the layered occupation history. Combined with the nearby Nakuru Museum, it makes a worthwhile half-day for history and archaeology interests. Allow 45–60 minutes.

Lake Nakuru Town

The city centre around Kenyatta Avenue has a busy covered market, several good hardware and fabric stalls, and the standard Kenyan town infrastructure. The covered market is worth walking through for fresh produce and local textiles.

Practical

Nakuru is easily reached from Nairobi on the A104 — the road is tarmac the whole way. Matatus from Nairobi’s Westlands stage cost KES 500–900 and take 2–3 hours.
