Watamu stays smaller and quieter than Malindi despite being only 15km apart. The village centres on the beach, the marine park, and the Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve. Hemingways Watamu

Location: Turtle Bay, north of Watamu village
Hemingways is the longest-established premium property on this section of coast and is best known for its deep-sea fishing operation - the club has won multiple marlin and sailfish competitions. The 54-room property sits directly on Turtle Bay with a large pool and two restaurants. The Italian management brings consistent service. Even for non-fishing guests the property is well-run: snorkelling equipment is available, the beach is pristine, and the seafood restaurant produces the best kitchen on the Watamu coast. Advance booking is essential for December–January and August.
Watamu Treehouse
Location: Watamu beach, set among forest and coastal bush
A small, family-run treehouse-style hotel with only a handful of rooms in timber towers, a shared pool and kayak and paddleboard trips. It suits couples and birders who want a quiet, nature-led stay rather than a resort. Rates vary widely by season and board basis, so check current prices on Booking.com (as of 2026).

Watamu Bandas (KWS Self-Catering)

Kenya Wildlife Service operates a small number of self-catering bandas within the national park boundary. These are basic - bring your own food, cooking is over a gas burner - but the location directly on the beach inside the park is exceptional. The beach section is quiet and the park entry fee is included in the banda rate. Book directly with KWS Watamu office well in advance; availability is limited.

The busiest periods are Christmas–New Year and July–August (Italian school holidays). Book premium properties 6–8 weeks ahead for these dates.
Marine park fees: The Watamu Marine National Park charges approximately USD 25/adult as of 2026, which is separate from hotel costs. Dive and snorkel operators typically include this in trip pricing - confirm when booking.
Gedi Ruins: The 15th-century Swahili-Arabic ruined city of Gede is 2km from Watamu - a short matatu ride from the village (KES 50) or taxi at approximately KES 300 return. Worth a morning visit from any Watamu property.
