The site was a quarry wasteland in the 1970s before agronomist René Caillaud converted it into a mature forest ecosystem over 30 years. 3. Diani Beach

Diani Beach runs for 20 km along the south coast and consistently ranks among Africa’s top beaches. The water is warm Indian Ocean, turquoise and calm, protected by a reef. Colobus monkeys move through the trees above the beach path. The drive from Mombasa involves the Likoni Ferry (free for pedestrians, approximately KES 100 for vehicles) and then 21 km south — total journey approximately 45–60 minutes depending on ferry queues.

6. Shimba Hills National Reserve
