Kenya Protest Disruption Warning for 24–25 June 2026

Travellers currently in Kenya or planning arrivals this week should be aware that 24 and 25 June 2026 are flagged as dates with elevated risk of protest activity, according to security updates issued by several embassies. Rolling demonstrations tied to fuel prices and the government’s June budget process have been taking place across the country, with Nairobi’s city centre and major urban roads seeing periodic disruption to traffic and movement.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the US Embassy have both advised citizens to avoid crowds and any visible demonstrations, to plan alternative routes if usual roads are blocked, and to follow instructions from local authorities. Demonstrations in Kenya can escalate quickly, and travellers are advised not to photograph protests or attempt to cross road blockades set up by demonstrators.

Safari travellers and those in coastal resort areas are largely unaffected, as protest activity is concentrated in urban centres. Nairobi National Park, Maasai Mara, Amboseli, and the Kenyan coast around Mombasa are operating normally. Tour operators and camps in wildlife areas are monitoring the situation and have not reported any impact on safari activities.

A separate health advisory remains in place noting that the Ebola outbreak is currently limited to parts of Uganda and eastern DRC, with Kenya unaffected and only standard health screening measures in place at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Mpox cases have been reported in parts of Kenya, and travellers are advised to follow standard hygiene precautions.

For those with transfers through Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is operating normally. Travellers flying into or out of Nairobi on 24–25 June should allow extra journey time from accommodation to the airport in case of road diversions.
