Mombasa sits at the heart of Kenya’s coastal tourism strip, which stretches roughly 100km from Kilifi in the north to Shimoni in the south. The beaches divide into three geographic zones: the North Coast (Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu), the South Coast (Diani, Tiwi, Galu), and the more remote stretches beyond. Each has a distinct character and price range.
Diani Beach
Diani is 30km south of Mombasa and consistently rated the best beach on the Kenyan coast. The sand is bright white and powdery, the water clear turquoise inside the protective coral reef, and the shore stretches for approximately 10km without a break. The beach is wide enough at low tide to walk comfortably for an hour in either direction from any hotel entrance.

Hotels at Diani Beach
Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa is the largest and best-known resort at Diani. The property has multiple pools, a full spa, and direct beach access. Rooms range from approximately USD 180-320 per night for a double room, including breakfast. The resort is particularly strong on water sports, with its own dive centre and a range of motorised activities. Booking is recommended 4-6 weeks in advance for the July-October peak season.
AfroChic Diani is a boutique hotel with 10 rooms on the beach. The property is smaller and more intimate than the large resort hotels, with individual attention to detail. Rates range from approximately USD 220-380 per night. The restaurant at AfroChic is considered one of the better dining options on the beach. Adults-only policy applies.
Neptune Paradise Deluxe Resort is a well-established all-inclusive property at the quieter southern end of Diani. Rates for all-inclusive twin accommodation start at approximately USD 140-200 per person per night, making it competitive for couples who want food and drinks included. The pools are large and the beach immediately in front of the hotel is one of the quieter sections of Diani.
Nomad Beach Hotel is a mid-range property with a mix of standard rooms and self-catering cottages. The Nomad Diani Beach Restaurant attached to the property is a popular gathering point for independent travellers and long-stay visitors. Rooms from approximately USD 90-160 per night.
Kenyaways Beach Hotel is a budget-friendly option 200m back from the beach, with rooms from approximately USD 40-80 per night. The location involves a short walk to the beach but is a reasonable choice for those prioritising spend on activities rather than accommodation.
Restaurants and Bars at Diani
Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant is built inside a natural coral cave 20m back from the beach. The cave is genuinely impressive and the seafood menu is among the best on the coast. A full dinner with seafood main course costs approximately KES 3,000-6,000 per person. Book ahead during high season - the cave seats limited guests and fills quickly.
Forty Thieves Beach Bar is Diani’s most established beachfront bar and the social hub for both tourists and long-stay expats. Grilled fish, pizza, and cocktails are the staples. A meal and two drinks costs approximately KES 2,000-4,000 per person.
Nomad Diani Beach Restaurant is open to non-guests and serves a broad menu covering Swahili fish, burgers, and pasta. The terrace directly on the beach is the draw. Approximately KES 1,500-3,500 per person.
Water Sports at Diani
Diani has the most developed water sports infrastructure on the Kenyan coast.
H2O Extreme is the longest-established water sports operator at Diani and covers the widest range of activities: kitesurfing lessons (approximately USD 70 per hour for a private lesson), windsurfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Equipment rental for kayaks or paddleboards starts at approximately USD 15-25 per hour.
Diani Diving (formerly Diving the Crab) is the main dive operator at Diani. Discovery dives for non-certified divers cost approximately USD 80-100 per person including equipment. PADI Open Water courses run approximately USD 380-480 for the full certification. Two-tank boat dives for certified divers cost approximately USD 80-100.
Kite surfing is particularly popular at Diani due to the consistent south-east trade wind (the Kaskazi) that blows reliably from July to September. The beach in front of the Neptune hotels is the main kite launch area.
Nyali Beach
Nyali is the closest beach resort area to Mombasa city, on the North Coast side of Nyali Bridge. The beach runs for approximately 3km and is the most convenient option for travellers arriving by air who do not want to deal with the Likoni Ferry crossing.
Serena Beach Resort and Spa is the top hotel at Nyali and one of the best-maintained resort properties on the Kenyan coast. Rooms range from approximately USD 160-280 per night for a double. The Swahili-influenced architecture is the most distinctive of any Nyali property, and the grounds are well-landscaped. The Tana Restaurant is open to non-residents for dinner.
Voyager Beach Resort is a family-focused all-inclusive property at Nyali with a pirate-ship themed pool and kids club. All-inclusive rates start at approximately USD 130-200 per person per night. The resort is notably child-friendly and has reliable food quality for an all-inclusive property.
Nyali Beach Hotel is a long-established property with rooms from approximately USD 80-140 per night. The hotel sits directly on the beach and has good access to the beach without the premium price of the Serena. Rooms are dated but functional.
The beach at Nyali is accessible and pleasant but generally less scenic than Diani - the sand is darker, the water less clear, and the beach narrower. It is, however, very convenient for day trips to Mombasa Old Town (15 minutes by taxi or tuk-tuk).
Bamburi Beach
Bamburi sits 8km north of Mombasa city, between Nyali and Shanzu. The beach is similar in character to Nyali - calm, sheltered, with a mix of resort hotels and smaller guesthouses. The area is more developed for budget and mid-range travellers than Nyali.
Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort is the largest property at Bamburi, a full resort with multiple pools, restaurants, and direct beach access. Rooms from approximately USD 120-220 per night.
Bamburi Beach Hotel is a smaller property with rooms from approximately USD 60-100 per night. It is one of the more economical beachfront options on the North Coast.
Haller Park (Bamburi Quarry Nature Trail) is worth combining with a beach day at Bamburi. The nature reserve rehabilitated a former cement quarry into a forest sanctuary and is home to hippos, giraffes, reptiles, and over 200 bird species. Entry costs approximately KES 500 per adult as of 2026. It is 10 minutes on foot from Bamburi Beach hotels.
Getting Between Beaches
All North Coast beaches (Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu) are accessible by matatu from the Mombasa city centre. Bamburi matatus depart from Mwembe Tayari stage and cost approximately KES 30-50. For South Coast beaches including Diani, take the Likoni Ferry and then a matatu south. Taxis from North Coast hotels to Diani cost approximately KES 3,000-5,000 as the route involves crossing back through the city and taking the ferry.
