Mombasa is Kenya’s second city and its oldest, sitting on a small coral island connected to the mainland by bridges and the Likoni Ferry. The Nairobi–Mombasa corridor is one of the most-travelled intercity routes in East Africa, and Mombasa benefits from an excellent range of transport connections: the Standard Gauge Railway, a busy domestic air route, and reliable overnight coach services. Full details in our Nairobi to Mombasa train guide.

This guide is part of our Mombasa travel guide; for the rest of your planning, see our guide to where to stay in Mombasa.

By SGR Train from Nairobi

The Madaraka Express Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is the best way to travel between Nairobi and Mombasa. Journey time is approximately 4.5 hours - significantly faster than the road - and the trains are comfortable, punctual, and air-conditioned.

Trains depart from Nairobi Terminus at Syokimau (approximately 20km from the Nairobi CBD - add a taxi or Uber for the first leg, KES 800–1,200). They arrive at Mombasa Terminus near the port area, south of Mombasa island.

Fares as of 2026: Economy approximately KES 1,500; First Class approximately KES 4,500; Premium approximately KES 12,000. Full details in our Nairobi to Mombasa train guide. Book via the Kenya Railways website or at the station. For weekends and public holidays, book at least a few days in advance as trains sell out. Several departures run daily in both directions.

From Mombasa Terminus, taxis and tuk-tuks are available to the city centre, Nyali (North Coast), and South Coast destinations. Transfer to the city centre costs approximately KES 500–800.

By Domestic Flight

Moi International Airport (IATA: MBA) is approximately 9km west of Mombasa’s city centre, on the mainland.

Kenya Airways and Jambojet both operate multiple daily flights from JKIA in Nairobi. Flight time is approximately 50–60 minutes. Jambojet often has the cheapest fares - from around USD 35–40 booked in advance - while Kenya Airways fares run USD 70–130+ on peak routes.

Taxis from the airport to Mombasa city centre cost approximately KES 800–1,200. To Nyali or Bamburi (North Coast resort area) it’s approximately KES 1,500–2,000.

By Long-Distance Bus from Nairobi

Several coach operators run the Nairobi–Mombasa route on the A109 highway. Modern Coast, Easy Coach, Mombasa Raha, and Coast Bus are the main operators, with both daytime and overnight departures.

Overnight coaches are the most popular option: depart Nairobi from around 8–10pm from the Machakos Bus Station area or from dedicated terminals (Modern Coast and Easy Coach have their own). Fares are approximately KES 900–1,500 one way as of 2026.

Journey time is approximately 8–9 hours by road. The A109 passes through Athi River, Mtito Andei, and Voi - the road is in generally good condition but coaches stop along the way. Coaches arrive at Mwembe Tayari Bus Station in Mombasa, a short tuk-tuk ride from the CBD.

From Malindi and the North Coast

From Malindi, matatus depart regularly throughout the day for the 120km journey south to Mombasa. Fare approximately KES 400–600, journey time approximately 2 hours via Kilifi. Change at Kilifi if needed - matatus run directly or in stages.

From Watamu, the usual route is matatu to Malindi (20km, KES 80–150) then onward matatu to Mombasa. From Kilifi, a direct matatu service takes approximately 1 hour to Mombasa (KES 250–350).

From Diani Beach and the South Coast

Reverse the Likoni Ferry journey: matatu north from Ukunda to the Likoni Ferry on the South Coast side (KES 100–200), then the free ferry crossing to Mombasa island (approximately 10 minutes), and then tuk-tuk or taxi into town.

Direct matatus from Diani area to the ferry terminal depart frequently throughout the day.

Arriving in Mombasa

Long-distance coaches arrive at Mwembe Tayari Bus Station, close to the city centre. The SGR arrives at Mombasa Terminus south of the island. The airport is on the mainland to the west.

Getting around the city: Tuk-tuks are the most practical way to navigate Old Town and the immediate city centre area (KES 100–300 per trip). Bolt and Uber operate in Mombasa - useful for longer transfers to Nyali or Bamburi (KES 500–1,200). Boda bodas are available but less advisable with luggage.
