Nairobi has a wide spread of accommodation — from backpacker hostels in the city centre to some of the most celebrated boutique hotels in East Africa. Picking the right neighbourhood matters as much as picking the right hotel: Nairobi’s traffic can turn a 7km journey into a 45-minute crawl during peak hours.
Neighbourhoods at a Glance
Westlands is Nairobi’s dining and nightlife hub. It sits west of the CBD and has the densest concentration of restaurants, bars, and shopping malls. Most of the mid-range international hotels cluster here, and it’s a short ride from both the CBD and Karen.
Karen is a leafy suburb 20km southwest of the centre, named after Karen Blixen. It’s quieter, greener, and the launching point for Nairobi National Park, Giraffe Centre, and David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Hotels here tend to feel like retreats rather than city hotels.
CBD (Central Business District) is where you’ll find the cheapest accommodation and direct access to public transport. It’s practical but noisy. Best for transit stays rather than base-camp accommodation.
Lavington and Kilimani are well-regarded residential areas between Westlands and Karen. Good value mid-range options and easy access to both Westlands dining and the southern suburbs.
Budget Hotels (KES 2,000–5,000/night as of 2026)
Nairobi Backpackers (Milimani Road, Upperhill) is one of the most established hostels in the city. Dorm beds run approximately KES 2,000/night; private rooms from KES 4,500/night. The communal kitchen, secure luggage storage, and notice board for safari sharing make it a practical base. Breakfast is available for approximately KES 500 extra.
Upper Hill Campsite and Hostel is popular with overlanders and budget travellers heading east. Private rooms from approximately KES 3,500/night. The site has a garden area, hot showers, and a simple bar.
Heron Portico Hotel (Milimani, Upperhill) sits in a quieter part of Upperhill with clean en-suite rooms from approximately KES 5,000/night. It has a swimming pool, restaurant, and secure parking — better value than hostels if you want privacy.
Ole Sereni Budget Wing — Ole Sereni is primarily a mid-range hotel but its standard rooms can dip to approximately KES 5,500/night outside peak season. It borders Nairobi National Park, so you can see giraffes from the pool.
Mid-Range Hotels (KES 8,000–20,000/night as of 2026)
Sarova Stanley (Kimathi Street, CBD) is Nairobi’s oldest operating hotel, open since 1902. Its central location, heritage lobby, and multiple dining options make it a good business base. Rooms from approximately KES 12,000/night. The Thorn Tree Café on the ground floor has been a travellers’ message board since the 1950s.
Nairobi Serena Hotel (Processional Way, CBD) is Nairobi’s flagship luxury-adjacent mid-range hotel. Rooms start from approximately KES 15,000/night and the facilities include multiple restaurants, a pool, and a spa. It hosts many NGO and government events.
The Tribe Hotel (Village Market, Gigiri) sits near the UN complex in the northern suburbs. Design-forward, with rooms from approximately KES 14,000/night. Village Market mall is attached, which is useful for provisioning.
Trademark Hotel (Gigiri) offers 152 rooms from approximately KES 10,000/night. It’s close to UN offices and embassies, quiet, and reliable.
Sankara Nairobi (Westlands) is a sleek 156-room hotel with rooftop dining and a pool. Rooms from approximately KES 18,000/night. Excellent location for the Westlands restaurant and bar scene.
Luxury Hotels (KES 40,000–120,000+/night as of 2026)
The Hemingways Nairobi (Karen) is widely considered Nairobi’s finest boutique hotel. Forty-five suites are set in lush Karen gardens. Rates run from approximately KES 60,000/night for suites. The on-site restaurant is one of the best in Nairobi, and the gin bar is worth a visit even if you aren’t staying. Private airport transfers and safari coordination are included in the service package.
House of Waine (Karen) is a 14-room property set in a colonial-era house with manicured grounds. From approximately KES 50,000/night, it offers personalized service and direct proximity to Karen’s boutiques and organic markets. The garden breakfast is exceptional.
Giraffe Manor (Karen) is the most photographed hotel in Africa — Rothschild giraffes lean through the breakfast windows. Accommodation is in seven rooms in the main manor or four rooms in the garden suite. Rates are per person and include all meals and park donations: approximately KES 100,000–140,000 per person per night as of 2026. Bookings typically close months in advance for peak season.
Fairmont The Norfolk (Harry Thuku Road, near CBD) is a Nairobi institution. The Lord Delamere Terrace has been a gathering point since 1904. Rooms from approximately KES 40,000/night. Its central location and heritage atmosphere attract both tourists and business travellers.
Booking Tips
Book Karen hotels early: Hemingways, House of Waine, and Giraffe Manor all fill quickly for July–October (migration season) and December–January. Six to nine months ahead is not excessive for Giraffe Manor.
Rates are negotiable in low season: April and May (long rains) see 25–35% discounts at many mid-range hotels. June is also relatively quiet.
Westlands is best for solo travellers who want restaurant access without a car. Karen is better for couples or those with a rental vehicle.
The CBD is cheapest but noisiest. Street noise starts early and the air quality is poorer than in Westlands or Karen.
Airport distance: JKIA is approximately 16km from Westlands and 23km from Karen. The Nairobi Expressway (tolled at approximately KES 200–400 per journey) has cut drive times significantly — expect 20–35 minutes to most hotels outside peak congestion hours.
