Luxury safari tented camp in the Masai Mara with acacia trees and open savanna

Kenya’s safari lodges span an extraordinary range — from bare-bones camping safaris at USD 150/person/day to some of the world’s most celebrated luxury properties at USD 2,000+/person/night. The park you choose determines the wildlife you see; the lodge you choose determines whether it’s a comfortable experience or an unforgettable one.

Masai Mara National Reserve

The Mara is Kenya’s most visited park and has the country’s highest density of premium lodges. Properties inside or bordering the reserve command the highest prices in Kenya, particularly during the wildebeest migration (late July to October).

Angama Mara (above the Oloololo Escarpment, bordering the reserve) is perched 500 metres above the Mara Valley on the exact ridge where Karen Blixen flew over in Out of Africa. Two camps with 30 tented suites total; rates from approximately USD 1,500 per person per night all-inclusive as of 2026. Each tent has panoramic views over the Mara. The photography studio and guide quality are among the best in Kenya.

Mahali Mzuri (Olare Motorogi Conservancy, bordering Mara) is Richard Branson’s safari camp — 12 tented suites set above the valley with 360-degree savanna views. From approximately USD 900 per person per night all-inclusive. The conservancy arrangement means lower vehicle density than the main reserve.

Sanctuary Olonana (Mara River, within the reserve) is a smaller, intimate property on the Mara River. Fifteen luxury tents with river views; from approximately USD 650 per person per night all-inclusive. River-crossing game drives are a highlight.

Governors’ Camp (Mara River, main reserve) is one of the Mara’s original camps, established in 1972. It hosts three camps totalling 37 tents. Standard camp from approximately USD 500 per person all-inclusive. Excellent historical archive and one of the most experienced guiding teams in the Mara.

Mara Ngenche Safari Camp (Mara River) is a smaller, newer camp with six tents, emphasising guiding quality over facilities size. From approximately USD 450 per person all-inclusive.

Budget tented camps: The Mara has several more affordable options within the national reserve or adjacent conservancies. Mara Sopa Lodge and Mara Serena Safari Lodge operate at approximately USD 250–350 per person all-inclusive. Mara Bush Camp is a basic tented option from approximately USD 180 per person all-inclusive.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli is famous for its large bull elephants and unobstructed views of Kilimanjaro rising across the border in Tanzania. The mountain is most visible in the early morning before cloud builds.

Ol Tukai Lodge (within the park, central location) is Amboseli’s most established and popular lodge. The lawns and open dining areas give direct elephant views — herds regularly cross through the lodge grounds at dawn and dusk. From approximately USD 350 per person per night all-inclusive as of 2026.

Tortilis Camp (private conservancy adjacent to Amboseli) is the most luxurious option in the Amboseli ecosystem, with 17 tents set in acacia woodland. From approximately USD 600 per person per night all-inclusive. The conservancy setting means private game drives with no other vehicles.

Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge (within the park) is a consistent mid-range option from approximately USD 280 per person all-inclusive. The swimming pool facing Kilimanjaro is a highlight.

Amboseli Sopa Lodge is more affordable at approximately USD 220 per person all-inclusive. Reliable food and service.

Tsavo National Parks (East and West)

Tsavo East and West together form Kenya’s largest protected area. Tsavo East is flat savanna famous for its red-dusty elephants; Tsavo West is more varied terrain with volcanic features, Mzima Springs (where hippos and crocodiles share clear spring water visible through an underwater observation chamber), and the Shetani lava flow.

Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp (Tsavo West) is the standout property in Tsavo. Sixteen large tents set in a private valley with views of the Chyulu Hills. From approximately USD 550 per person per night all-inclusive as of 2026. The camp is sustainably powered and maintains its own rhino sanctuary section.

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge (Tsavo West) is one of Kenya’s oldest lodges, opened in 1962. It overlooks a waterhole that reliably draws elephants and plains game. From approximately USD 250 per person all-inclusive. Not glamorous but historically significant and well-positioned.

Severin Safari Camp (Tsavo West) is a comfortable mid-range option from approximately USD 200 per person all-inclusive. Good location for Mzima Springs visits.

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu is a remote, semi-arid reserve 350km north of Nairobi. It holds wildlife species not found in southern Kenya — the Grevy’s zebra (larger, narrower-striped), reticulated giraffe (sharper geometric pattern), Beisa oryx, and gerenuk (a long-necked antelope). The Ewaso Ng’iro River running through the reserve draws elephants and leopards.

Sasaab Lodge (private conservancy bordering Samburu) is a nine-room lodge with a Moroccan-Swahili design aesthetic, completely improbable in its semi-arid setting. From approximately USD 700 per person per night all-inclusive as of 2026. The infinity pool overlooking the river has become genuinely iconic in Kenya travel photography.

Elephant Bedroom Camp (Samburu Game Reserve) is a 12-tent camp directly on the Ewaso Ng’iro River. Elephants cross at the ford in front of camp most evenings. From approximately USD 450 per person all-inclusive. Excellent guiding quality.

Samburu Sopa Lodge provides more accessible pricing from approximately USD 200 per person all-inclusive. Solid mid-range option.

Booking Strategy and Seasonal Discounts

Migration premium (July–October): All Mara lodges charge peak-season rates during the wildebeest migration. Expect to pay 30–50% more than the rest of the year. This period is also the most spectacular for wildlife viewing.

Long rains discount (April–May): Lodges across all parks reduce rates by 30–40%. The Mara can be very muddy in May. Amboseli and Tsavo are better dry-season parks during this period. Some smaller camps close for maintenance in April–May.

Conservancy vs national reserve: Lodges in private conservancies bordering national reserves (like Mahali Mzuri in Olare Motorogi) typically charge higher rates but deliver lower vehicle density and the option for night drives and off-road driving, which are not permitted in national reserves.

All-inclusive rates: Most quoted safari lodge rates are all-inclusive (accommodation, all meals, game drives, park fees, and transfers from the nearest airstrip). Always clarify what’s included before comparing prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best safari lodge in Kenya?
Angama Mara is widely considered Kenya's finest safari property, perched above the Mara valley with extraordinary views. Mahali Mzuri offers comparable luxury. For Amboseli, Ol Tukai Lodge gives the classic Kilimanjaro backdrop.
When should I book safari lodges in Kenya?
Book the Masai Mara for July–October (wildebeest migration) at least 6 months in advance — good lodges sell out. Low season (April–May) sees discounts of 30–40%.
What is the difference between a lodge and a tented camp?
A lodge has permanent brick or stone structures. A tented camp uses large canvas tents on raised platforms. Both can be extremely comfortable — Mahali Mzuri and Angama Mara are among the world's best tented camps. The distinction is primarily about setting and atmosphere.
