Where to Stay in Mombasa: Old Town, North Coast, and South Coast

Mombasa’s geography splits its accommodation into three distinct zones, each with a different feel. The choice between them depends on whether you want cultural immersion, straightforward beach resort access, or the quiet of the South Coast.

Mombasa Old Town and City Island

Mombasa island is a compact historic city. Old Town occupies the northeastern corner and is the most characterful place to stay in Mombasa, though the accommodation is limited compared to the beach zones.

Who it suits: Travellers interested in Swahili history, Fort Jesus, local restaurants, and the working character of an East African port city — see our Mombasa things to do guide for the full list. Those wanting a cultural experience rather than a beach holiday.

Swahili House (Old Town) — approximately KES 8,000/night; restored Swahili merchant house with rooftop terrace. Tamarind Village (Nyali, Old Harbour views) — approximately KES 12,000/night; apartments with harbour access. Mombasa Beach Hotel (North Point, Mombasa island) — approximately KES 9,000/night; older property with small beach and sea views.

Transport from Old Town: Tuk-tuks are the practical way to move around the island — approximately KES 100–300 per trip. Uber and Bolt operate from approximately KES 500–1,000 for city trips.

North Coast — Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu

The North Coast begins across the Nyali Bridge (7km from Mombasa city centre) and runs approximately 15km north. This is Kenya’s most established beach resort zone, dominated by large all-inclusive hotels.

Who it suits: Travellers who want straightforward beach resort access — pool, beach, watersports, restaurants on-site — without the ferry logistics of the South Coast. Families and package holidaymakers.

Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort and Spa (Bamburi) is the North Coast’s largest and most comprehensive property, with multiple pools, a spa, and direct beach access. From approximately KES 18,000/night room-only; all-inclusive from approximately KES 25,000/night as of 2026.

Voyager Beach Resort (Bamburi) is popular with families, with a good kids’ club and beach access. From approximately KES 15,000/night room-only.

English Point Marina (Nyali) is a boutique marina hotel with Mombasa harbour views rather than open beach access. From approximately KES 22,000/night. Better for exploring the city than for beach time.

Bamburi Beach Hotel (Bamburi) — consistent mid-range resort from approximately KES 11,000–14,000/night.

Neptune Beach Resort (Bamburi) — well-maintained family resort from approximately KES 14,000/night with a strong kids’ programme.

North Coast transport: Tuk-tuks run the length of the coast road from Nyali to Shanzu. A ride from Bamburi to Mombasa city takes approximately 20–30 minutes and costs approximately KES 200–400.

South Coast — Likoni, Tiwi, Diani

To reach the South Coast, you cross the Likoni Ferry — free for pedestrians, approximately KES 60 for vehicles. The ferry runs 24 hours but queues can be significant during rush hours. Once across, the A14 highway runs south through Likoni and Tiwi to Diani Beach, 35km from the ferry.

Who it suits: Travellers who want better beaches than the North Coast (Diani is consistently ranked among Africa’s top beaches), a quieter atmosphere, and more independent travel options. Snorkelling and diving enthusiasts (Kisite Marine Park is accessible from here). Kite surfers.

Luxury options at Diani:

  • Almanara Luxury Villas — from approximately USD 400/night; private villas with plunge pools.
  • Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa — from approximately USD 250/night; Kenya’s premier South Coast resort.

Mid-range at Diani:

  • Leopard Beach Resort and Spa — approximately KES 20,000/night; excellent location and dive school.
  • Southern Palms Beach Resort — approximately KES 18,000/night room-only; large pool area, family-friendly.

Budget at Diani:

  • Diani Sea Lodge — approximately KES 7,000/night; straightforward, close to beach.
  • Diani Backpackers — from approximately KES 2,500/night dorm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stay in Old Town Mombasa or on the North Coast?
Old Town suits travellers interested in Swahili culture, Fort Jesus, and local restaurants. The North Coast (Nyali, Bamburi) is better for pure beach time with resort facilities. The two areas are 15–25 minutes apart by tuk-tuk or taxi.
Is the South Coast (Diani) better than the North Coast for beaches?
Most independent travellers prefer Diani. The beach is wider, cleaner, and the water clearer than most North Coast sections. It does require crossing the Likoni Ferry, which adds logistics.
What are the long rains dates for Mombasa?
The long rains typically run April–May. Many smaller properties reduce rates or close for maintenance. The short rains fall October–November and are lighter. July–August is dry but cooler.
