Where to Stay in Nairobi: Neighbourhood Guide

Nairobi sprawls across 700 square kilometres, and where you stay determines how much time you spend in traffic. The city’s four main accommodation zones each suit a different type of visit.

CBD (Central Business District)

The CBD is Nairobi’s oldest commercial core. It’s the cheapest accommodation zone and has the best access to public transport (matatus and buses), the national museum, and government buildings. The downside is noise — traffic starts early and the air quality is noticeably poorer than in Westlands or Karen.

Fairmont The Norfolk (Harry Thuku Road) is the CBD’s finest address. It dates to 1904, when it was the Nairobi terminus for Kenya’s colonial railway travellers. The Lord Delamere Terrace bar is a Nairobi institution and worth visiting even if you’re not staying. Rooms from approximately KES 40,000/night as of 2026.

Sarova Stanley (Kimathi Street) is the CBD’s best-known hotel and another historical address from Nairobi’s colonial era. The Thorn Tree Café was a renowned travellers’ message board for decades. Rooms from approximately KES 12,000/night. The central location, multiple restaurants, and business facilities make it a reliable choice.

Kenya Comfort Suites (Comfort Suites Road, CBD) is a practical mid-range business option from approximately KES 7,000/night. Self-contained studios with kitchenettes are available.

Westlands

Westlands is Nairobi’s most dynamic neighbourhood for eating out and nightlife. It’s west of the CBD and is the area where most international visitors and expatriates choose to stay. Streets around Westlands Avenue, Ring Road West, and Sarit Centre mall have the city’s highest restaurant density.

Sankara Nairobi (Westlands) is the neighbourhood’s standout hotel — 156 rooms in a contemporary tower with rooftop dining and a pool. From approximately KES 18,000/night. Well positioned for the Westlands restaurant scene.

Ole Sereni Hotel (Langata Road — technically bordering Westlands and Karen) is worth including here for its extraordinary location: the hotel’s pool and restaurant overlook Nairobi National Park. Giraffes are regularly visible from the pool deck. From approximately KES 15,000/night.

Tribe Hotel (Village Market, Gigiri — north of Westlands) suits visitors to the UN complex or the northern suburbs. From approximately KES 14,000/night. Attached to Village Market mall.

Panafric Hotel (Valley Road) is a solid mid-range business hotel at approximately KES 9,000/night, well positioned between Westlands and the CBD.

Karen

Karen is a leafy suburb 20km southwest of the CBD, named after Karen Blixen. It has the feel of a small country town rather than a city suburb — wide verges, mature trees, and low traffic compared to Westlands. It’s the best base for:

The Hemingways Nairobi (Karen) is widely considered Nairobi’s best boutique hotel. Forty-five suites in mature gardens, a gin bar with over 200 labels, and a restaurant that ranks with the city’s finest. From approximately KES 60,000/night as of 2026. The concierge service for safari bookings and airport logistics is excellent.

House of Waine (Karen) is a 14-room colonial-era property from approximately KES 50,000/night. The garden breakfasts and relaxed pace are the main draws. Good for a quiet night before an early safari departure.

Giraffe Manor (Karen) needs no introduction — this is the hotel where Rothschild giraffes peer through the windows at breakfast. Seven rooms in the manor plus four garden suites; rates from approximately KES 100,000 per person per night as of 2026, all-inclusive. Book months in advance.

Ngong House (Karen) is a boutique property with seven treehouse-style cottages from approximately KES 28,000/night. Good value for a Karen address.

Lavington and Kilimani

These residential areas between Westlands and Karen are popular with long-stay expatriates and offer good mid-range hotel value. They’re quieter than Westlands but have fewer walkable restaurants.

Palacina The Residence and Suites (Kilimani) offers self-catering apartments from approximately KES 12,000/night for a studio. Well maintained and good for stays of 3+ nights where cooking in is an option.

The Boma Nairobi (Milimani, near Upperhill) is a contemporary hotel from approximately KES 11,000/night. Good facilities and reliable service.

Voyager Beach Resort — Nairobi does not exist; the brand is coast-only. A useful option in this area is Crowne Plaza Nairobi (Upperhill), from approximately KES 13,000/night, which caters to business travellers with good airport accessibility via the Expressway.

Budget Accommodation

Budget travellers across all neighbourhoods can look to:

Nairobi Backpackers (Milimani) — dorms from KES 2,000/night, private rooms from KES 4,500/night. Upper Hill Campsite — camping and private rooms from KES 2,500/night. Kenya Comfort Suites (CBD) — from KES 7,000/night with kitchenette.

Transport Between Neighbourhoods

Uber and Bolt are the reliable options across Nairobi, with most city rides costing KES 400–1,200. The Nairobi Expressway runs from the airport to Westlands (toll approximately KES 200–400 per journey) and has significantly reduced journey times from JKIA to most hotels.

For a list of top things to do from each of these areas, see our Nairobi things to do guide. For logistics, the Nairobi airport guide covers transfers from JKIA to each neighbourhood. For the Giraffe Centre and David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Karen, see the Giraffe Centre guide and David Sheldrick guide. A pre-booked JKIA airport transfer to Westlands or Karen eliminates the taxi queue on arrival and sets a fixed price before you clear customs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stay in Westlands or Karen in Nairobi?
Westlands is better for nightlife, dining, and walkability. Karen is quieter, greener, and closer to wildlife attractions (Giraffe Centre, DSWT, Nairobi National Park). If you have one night before or after a safari, Karen is ideal.
Is the CBD a good area to stay in Nairobi?
The CBD suits business travellers who need access to government buildings and central offices. For tourists, it's noisier and less safe at night than Westlands or Karen. The Sarova Stanley and Fairmont Norfolk are good CBD options.
How far is Nairobi city centre from JKIA airport?
JKIA is approximately 16km from Westlands and 23km from Karen. The Nairobi Expressway has reduced journey times. Budget approximately 25–45 minutes to most hotels outside peak congestion.
