7 Days in Kenya: The Essential First-Timer Itinerary
Seven days is enough for a memorable Kenya trip if the days are used efficiently. This itinerary covers the two experiences that define Kenya for most visitors: the wildlife of the Masai Mara and the Indian Ocean coast. Nairobi bookends the trip.
Adjust based on your interests and budget — the structure works at backpacker and luxury levels by swapping specific accommodation and transport options.
Before You Arrive
Visa: Apply for a Kenya eVisa online at immigration.ecitizen.go.ke at least 2 weeks before arrival. USD 50 single entry for most nationalities. Some African Union nationalities are exempt.
Vaccinations: Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from an endemic country. Hepatitis A and Typhoid recommended. Malaria prophylaxis for the entire trip including Nairobi (lower risk but present).
Currency: Kenyan Shilling (KES). Withdraw KES on arrival at Nairobi airport ATMs. Many lodges accept USD; carry both.
Day 1: Nairobi Arrival
Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is the main entry point. Most international flights arrive in the morning or evening.
If you arrive in the morning:
- Check into your hotel (see accommodation below)
- Head to Karen suburb: David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage (visit 11am–noon only, book in advance at sheldrickwildlifetrust.org, approximately USD 10 entry)
- Drive 10 minutes to the Giraffe Centre (Rothschild giraffe feeding from a raised platform, approximately USD 15, open 9am–5pm)
- Dinner in Karen at Talisman Restaurant (approximately KES 2,500–4,500 per person) or the Carnivore (classic Nairobi game meat restaurant, approximately KES 3,500–5,000)
Accommodation Nairobi (per person/night):
- Budget: Wildebeest Eco Camp, Karen (camping from KES 1,500, dorm from KES 2,500)
- Mid-range: Ngong Road area hotels (Karen Blixen Coffee Garden guesthouse, from KES 8,000/room)
- Upmarket: The Emakoko (inside Nairobi National Park boundary, from approximately USD 300/person full board)
Day 2: Nairobi National Park and Travel to Mara
Morning: Nairobi National Park — the only national park with a city skyline backdrop on earth. Entry approximately USD 52/day non-resident. Lions, rhinos, buffalo, hippos, and giraffe are reliable sightings. Hire a driver from your hotel (approximately KES 4,000–6,000 for a morning drive, 7am–11am). This is the only park in the world where you can be on safari within 15 minutes of an international airport.
Afternoon: Transfer to the Masai Mara. Options:
- By air (recommended): Fly from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Keekorok or Ol Kiombo airstrip in the Mara — approximately 45 minutes, from USD 150 one way. Book with Safarilink or AirKenya.
- By road: 5–6 hour drive (approximately 270km). Budget if booked through a shared safari operator.
Arrive Masai Mara: Check in to your camp in time for the evening game drive (typically 4pm–7pm).
Day 3: Masai Mara — Full Day Safari
Schedule: Morning game drive (6am–10am) + evening game drive (4pm–7pm). Lunch at camp. Rest during the hottest midday hours.
Wildlife to expect: The Mara supports the densest concentration of predators in Africa. Lions are spotted on most drives. Cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and giraffe are all regularly seen. July–September: wildebeest migration river crossings.
Options:
- River crossing viewing (July–September): Ask your guide to position early at the main crossing points. Wait — crossings can happen at any time and the drama is worth the patience.
- Bush breakfast: Many camps offer breakfast delivered to a location in the bush after the morning drive — a worthwhile upgrade.
- Hot air balloon: Pre-book through your camp or directly with Governors’ Camp Balloon Safaris (approximately USD 450/person, 1-hour dawn flight followed by bush breakfast). The Mara from the air is extraordinary.
Accommodation Masai Mara (per person/night, full board):
- Budget: Mara Explorers Camp (camping from approximately USD 80/person)
- Mid-range: Mara Simba Lodge (from approximately USD 200/person)
- Upmarket: Mahali Mzuri / Angama Mara (from approximately USD 700–1,000/person)
Day 4: Masai Mara — Second Full Day
Use a second full day in the Mara for a different area of the park or the conservancies:
Mara Conservancies option: If your accommodation is in Olare Motorogi, Naboisho, or Mara North conservancy (rather than the National Reserve), you can access exclusive game drive areas, night drives (after 7pm), and guided bush walks — none of which are permitted in the National Reserve. This significantly enhances the experience and justifies the premium accommodation cost.
Visit a Maasai village: Arranged through your camp — approximately USD 20–30/person. A genuine cultural visit (not just a craft market), including explanation of traditional structure, livestock management, and current land use challenges.
Day 5: Depart Mara, Travel to Coast
Morning: Final game drive, depart by 10am.
Option A — fly direct Mara to Mombasa/Malindi: Not all days have direct connections; check schedules at Safarilink/AirKenya. Typically requires a Nairobi Wilson Airport transit (1–2 hour layover). Total journey approximately 3–4 hours.
Option B — fly Mara to Nairobi, take SGR train to Mombasa: Nairobi Wilson to Nairobi Syokimau by taxi (30 minutes, approximately KES 1,500–2,500), then the Madaraka Express train (approximately 5 hours, KES 700–2,000 depending on class). Efficient combination.
Option C (budget): Bus from Nairobi to Mombasa — overnight bus (approximately KES 1,000–1,500, 7–8 hours).
Arrive Diani Beach or Mombasa late afternoon.
Day 6: Diani Beach or Mombasa
If at Diani:
- Snorkelling on the reef (half-day trip from your hotel, approximately USD 40–60)
- Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant for dinner (book in advance, approximately KES 4,000–6,000/person)
If at Mombasa:
- Morning: Fort Jesus (approximately USD 15, open 8am–6pm) and the Old Town
- Afternoon: Head to Nyali or Bamburi beach by matatu
- Evening: Seafood dinner on the beachfront
Accommodation (per night):
- Budget Diani: Diani Backpackers (from KES 3,500/dorm, KES 6,000/private room)
- Mid-range Diani: Leopard Beach Resort (from approximately KES 12,000/night)
- Luxury Diani: Alfajiri Villas (from approximately USD 350/night)
Day 7: Beach and Departure
Morning: Early swim and breakfast. If flying from Diani Ukunda Airport — it is 5 minutes away, check-in is minimal. If flying from Mombasa Moi International: allow 30–45 minutes transfer from Diani.
Direct flights home from Mombasa: Kenya Airways and British Airways serve Nairobi from Mombasa; international connections through Jomo Kenyatta. Mombasa also has some direct European services — check for your departure city.
Return to Nairobi for international departure: Fly Mombasa–Nairobi (1 hour) or take the SGR (5 hours). Nairobi JKIA for international departure.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is 7 days enough for Kenya?
- Seven days gives a solid introduction to Kenya's two headline experiences — wildlife safari and Indian Ocean coast. The classic combination is 2 days in Nairobi, 3 days in the Masai Mara, and 2 days on the coast (Diani or Mombasa). More time is always better, but 7 days done efficiently is genuinely rewarding.
- How much does a 7-day Kenya trip cost?
- Budget travellers: approximately USD 700–1,000 all-in (camping safari, budget guesthouses, matatu/bus transport). Mid-range: approximately USD 1,500–2,500 (tented camp safari, mid-range hotels, internal flights). Luxury: USD 4,000–7,000+ (private lodge safaris, coastal villa, charter flights). Masai Mara park fees (approximately USD 80/day) and flights add significant cost regardless of budget.
