10-Day Kenya Safari Itinerary: Mara, Amboseli, and Naivasha

Elephants with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background at Amboseli National Park

Ten days gives enough time to cover Kenya’s most iconic wildlife destinations without rushing. This itinerary uses the southern circuit — Nairobi, Masai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Naivasha, and Hell’s Gate — with options to add a coast segment for those with flexibility.

The routing avoids unnecessary backtracking: Nairobi → Mara (fly or drive west) → Amboseli (fly south to the Tanzania border) → Naivasha (drive northwest, past Nairobi) → Nairobi.

Day 1: Nairobi Arrival

Arrive Nairobi JKIA. Transfer to hotel in Westlands, Kilimani, or Karen.

Afternoon options:

  • Giraffe Centre (Karen, open 9am–5pm, approximately USD 15) — worth an hour if you arrive in the morning or afternoon
  • Rest and acclimatise — Nairobi is at 1,700m

Dinner: Carnivore Restaurant (game meat rotisserie, Nairobi institution, KES 4,000–6,000/person) or a quieter option in Karen.

Accommodation:

  • Budget: Yellow Sun Nairobi (Westlands, from KES 4,000/room)
  • Mid-range: Hemingways Nairobi (Karen, from KES 18,000/room)
  • Luxury: House of Waine (boutique, Karen, from approximately USD 350/night)

Day 2: Nairobi — City and National Park

Morning: Nairobi National Park — sunrise game drive (7am–10am) through the only national park bordering a major city. Lions, black rhino, hippos, buffalo. Entry approximately USD 52/day. Hire a driver-guide from your hotel (approximately KES 5,000–8,000 for a morning drive).

Afternoon: David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage (Karen, visiting hour 11am–noon daily, booking required at sheldrickwildlifetrust.org, USD 10). The infant elephants are extraordinary.

Late afternoon: Fly from Nairobi Wilson Airport to the Masai Mara (45 minutes, Safarilink or AirKenya, from USD 150 one way). Alternatively, night in Nairobi and drive to the Mara on Day 3 morning.

Days 3–5: Masai Mara (3 Nights)

Three nights in the Masai Mara gives two full days of game driving plus morning and evening drives on arrival/departure days — effectively 4 game drives.

Day 3 arrival: Afternoon game drive (4pm–7pm). Sundowner stop.

Day 4: Full day — morning drive (6am–10am), rest at camp, afternoon drive (4pm–7pm). This is the day for predator focus — lion hunts are most active at dawn.

Day 5: Morning drive, depart by 10am for Amboseli.

Key experiences:

  • River crossings (July–September): Position at crossings early and wait
  • Cheetah hunts: Most common on the open plains, morning drives
  • Mara conservancy night drive: Only available in private conservancies, not the National Reserve

Accommodation (per person/night, full board):

  • Budget: Mara Bushbuck Camp (from USD 100/person)
  • Mid-range: Sentrim Mara Camp (from USD 180/person)
  • Upmarket: Governors’ Camp (from approximately USD 450/person, on the river)
  • Luxury: Angama Mara (clifftop views, from USD 900/person)

Masai Mara entry fee: Approximately USD 80/day non-resident (Narok County Conservation Area).

Day 5: Mara to Amboseli

By air (recommended): Fly from Mara airstrip to Amboseli (via Nairobi Wilson if no direct service, approximately 2–2.5 hours total). Charter options for Mara–Amboseli direct.

By road (budget option): Return to Nairobi (5–6 hours) then drive south to Amboseli (4 hours via Namanga). Too long for one day — split over two days if driving.

Arrive Amboseli late afternoon.

Days 6–7: Amboseli (2 Nights)

Amboseli is Kenya’s elephant park — the Amboseli Research Project has studied this population since 1972, and the elephants here are among the most habituated to vehicles anywhere in Africa. Bulls carrying metre-plus tusks approach vehicles within metres.

Day 6: Afternoon drive through the central swamp — elephant herds concentrate here year-round. Kilimanjaro is best photographed in the early morning before cloud builds (be at the viewpoint by 7am for the cleanest shots).

Day 7: Full day. Morning swamp drive, afternoon Ol Tukai viewpoint for Kilimanjaro backdrop photographs.

Other wildlife: Lions, cheetahs, leopards (rare), hippos, over 400 bird species. The park is small (392km²) — a focused 2 nights is adequate.

Entry fee: Approximately USD 60/day non-resident.

Accommodation (per person/night, full board):

  • Budget: Amboseli Eco Camp (camping, from approximately USD 50/person)
  • Mid-range: Ol Tukai Lodge (from approximately KES 25,000/person)
  • Upmarket: Satao Elerai Camp (from approximately USD 250/person)
  • Luxury: Tortilis Camp (from approximately USD 500/person)

Day 8: Amboseli to Lake Naivasha

Drive or fly north from Amboseli to Lake Naivasha (approximately 4–5 hours by road via Nairobi, or fly via Nairobi Wilson Airport to Naivasha area).

En route through Nairobi: The city is unavoidable on the road route. Budget an hour for lunch or a shopping stop in Westlands — Sarit Centre or Village Market for supplies, lightweight souvenirs, or a comfortable coffee break.

Arrive Lake Naivasha late afternoon. Check in to lakeside accommodation.

Lake Naivasha afternoon: Boat trip on the lake (approximately KES 2,000–3,000/person, 1 hour). Hippos are visible at close range from the water, fish eagles are abundant, and pelicans are resident.

Accommodation Lake Naivasha (per night):

  • Budget: Camp Carnelley’s (camping KES 1,500, banda from KES 3,500)
  • Mid-range: Olerai House (from approximately KES 18,000/room)
  • Upmarket: Crater Lake Tented Camp (from approximately KES 25,000/person)

Day 9: Hell’s Gate and Crescent Island

A full day combining two of the Rift Valley’s best non-standard activities:

Morning — Hell’s Gate National Park (3 hours): Cycle among zebras, giraffes, and buffalo. Bicycle hire at Elsa Gate approximately KES 300–500/hour. The 22km circuit takes 2–3 hours.

Gorge Walk (2–3 hours): Descend into the Hell’s Gate Gorge for the dramatic canyon walk (guide mandatory, approximately KES 1,000–1,500). Optional: Olkaria Geothermal Spa at the exit (KES 1,500).

Afternoon — Crescent Island: Boat access from Hippo Point on Lake Naivasha (approximately KES 1,500/person return). A walking safari on a private island with no fencing and no predators — giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and waterbuck walk among visitors at close range.

Entry fees: Hell’s Gate USD 26, Crescent Island approximately KES 1,500.

Day 10: Return to Nairobi and Departure

Morning: Lake Naivasha is 90km from Nairobi — approximately 1.5 hours by car. Allow extra time for traffic.

Airport: JKIA for international departure. Most international evening flights depart 9pm–midnight — there is time for a farewell lunch in Nairobi.

Last morning options:

  • Nairobi National Museum (Uhuru Highway, approximately USD 10, well-worth 2 hours)
  • Westgate or Village Market for final purchases
  • Karen Blixen Museum (the author’s original farmhouse, approximately USD 10)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best 10-day Kenya safari itinerary?
The classic 10-day circuit covers Masai Mara (3–4 nights for maximum wildlife), Amboseli (2 nights for elephants and Kilimanjaro), and Lake Naivasha/Hell's Gate (1–2 nights for a different experience). This hits Kenya's three most iconic wildlife locations and includes cycling with wildlife at Hell's Gate. Internal flights between parks save significant travel time.
Is 10 days enough to see the best of Kenya?
Ten days covers Kenya's main southern circuit comfortably. For the northern circuit (Samburu, Laikipia) you would need 14 days minimum. For the coast in addition to safaris: 14 days. Ten days used well on the southern circuit — Mara, Amboseli, Naivasha — is a complete and highly satisfying trip.
