Visiting Kenya in June: Dry Season Returns, Great Game Viewing
June marks the return of the dry season in most of Kenya. The long rains ease, skies clear, roads dry out, and wildlife begins to concentrate again. Wildebeest in the Serengeti begin their northward migration towards the Mara. Prices are still below peak. June is an underrated month to visit Kenya.

Wildlife in June
Masai Mara: The first wildebeest scouts from the Serengeti begin arriving at the Mara’s southern border. The main migration crossing season is July–September, but the precursor movement in late June is exciting. Resident predators are excellent.
All parks: Wildlife is beginning to reconcentrate as the landscape dries. Elephants, lions, and cheetahs are very visible.
Birdwatching: Good — many migratory species still present before returning north.
Kenya Coast in June
The SE trade winds (kusi) arrive in June. This makes the Indian Ocean rough for swimming and snorkelling on exposed beaches. However, kitesurfing at Diani peaks in June–August when the kusi winds are consistent. If you are a kitesurfer or windsurfer, June–August is the best time for the coast.
Beach conditions at Diani and Watamu are less ideal for casual swimming. Lamu, which is more sheltered, remains pleasant.
Crowds and Pricing
June is still shoulder pricing — below the July–September peak. Availability is generally good. From late June some lodges raise prices in anticipation of the July rush.
Best value window: First two weeks of June have good conditions at below-peak prices.
Best Activities in June
- Masai Mara as the wildebeest migration approaches
- Kitesurfing at Diani (kusi season starts)
- Samburu game drives — dry season in full swing
- Nairobi day trips — Nairobi National Park, Giraffe Centre
- Hell’s Gate cycling — good weather, not too hot
Where to Go in June
First choice: Masai Mara — the landscape is recovering from the rains and turning a vivid green-gold. The resident predators are very active and the first migration scouts are arriving. June offers the dramatic Mara landscape with far fewer vehicles than July–September.
Second choice: Samburu — fully dry by June. The Ewaso Ng’iro River is lower and wildlife density is high. Hot days (28–30°C) but cool mornings. The Samburu Special Five are reliably seen.
Coast: Lamu — though the kusi makes the main Diani/Watamu coast rough for swimming, Lamu is sheltered and excellent in June. June is a great month to visit Lamu Old Town — temperatures are manageable, tourist numbers are low, and dhow trips are operating.

- Light daytime clothing — afternoons warm up to 22–28°C depending on region
- Good walking shoes for Hell’s Gate and any Nairobi day trips
- Sunscreen — UV remains high even in cool conditions
FAQs
Is June a good time to visit Kenya for safari? Yes — June is one of the most underrated months. The dry season is returning, wildlife is very good, and prices have not yet risen to July peak levels. The only downside is the coast swimming conditions (rough seas from the kusi wind).
Does the migration happen in June? The main river crossings begin in July. In June, the first wildebeest scouts arrive from Tanzania but the main herds are still in the Serengeti. The resident Masai Mara wildlife is excellent in June regardless of migration timing.
What is the kusi wind? The SE trade winds (kusi) blow June–August along the Kenyan coast. They create rough conditions for swimming and snorkelling at exposed beaches like Diani and Watamu, but they are perfect for kitesurfing and windsurfing.
