Visiting Kenya in October: Short Rains Begin, Good Value
October marks the start of Kenya’s short rains and the end of the migration season in the Masai Mara. The wildebeest return south to Tanzania as the first rains bring fresh grass to the Serengeti. The Mara’s resident wildlife remains excellent. Whale shark season opens on the coast. October is a good-value shoulder month.

Wildlife in October
Masai Mara: The last wildebeest herds cross back to Tanzania in October — some September years extend into October but the migration is essentially over by mid-October. Calving season begins in the Serengeti from December — new calves visible in the Mara’s resident species in October–November.
The Masai Mara remains one of Africa’s great wildlife destinations even without the migration — resident lions, cheetahs, elephants, leopards, and hundreds of buffalo.
All parks: Short rains bring a landscape transformation — the dry grass begins turning green, flowers emerge. Animal calving season for many species.
Coast — Whale Sharks: The whale shark season opens at Watamu and around Chale Island (Diani) in October. The sharks arrive as the Indian Ocean warms and plankton blooms. October is the start of a sustained season through March.
Coast Conditions in October
The short rains bring brief but heavy showers to the coast — the Indian Ocean calms as the SE trade winds ease. By late October, beach conditions are improving. October is an excellent time for the coast if you accept the possibility of afternoon rain.
Turtle nesting at Watamu: Continues from October through March — Local Ocean Conservation runs turtle monitoring walks nightly.
October Pricing
Shoulder season — prices drop from the July–September peak. Most lodges have good availability. A good month for value-conscious visitors who don’t specifically need the migration.
Best Activities in October
- Masai Mara — excellent resident wildlife without migration crowds
- Whale shark trips at Watamu — the season opens
- Samburu — still dry and hot in the north
- Birdwatching — migratory species arrive from Europe/Asia for the East African summer
Where to Go in October
Best for wildlife: Samburu — the northern parks stay drier than the south in October. Wildlife is concentrated, conditions are warm (28–30°C), and the Samburu Special Five are reliably at the river. Fewer tourists than the Mara.
Best for the complete experience: Masai Mara + Watamu coast — a 7-night split is ideal in October: 4 nights Mara for excellent resident wildlife, 3 nights Watamu for whale shark trips and turtle walks. October has good availability and shoulder pricing for both.
Avoid in October: Amboseli — the short rains often cloud Kilimanjaro throughout October. Better to visit in January–February for the clearest mountain views.

FAQs
Is October a good time to visit Kenya? Yes — particularly for the coast and Samburu. The migration has ended but resident Mara wildlife is excellent. Whale shark season opens at Watamu. Prices are below peak.
Can I still see the migration in October? The last herds typically return south by mid-October. Early October sometimes has straggler herds. Do not plan an October trip specifically for migration crossings — plan it for the excellent resident wildlife.
What is the whale shark season in Kenya? October–March at Watamu and around Chale Island near Diani. The sharks (which are filter feeders, not dangerous) aggregate as the Indian Ocean warms. Trips run from Watamu Blue Bay — book through Local Ocean Conservation or reputable Watamu dive operators.
