December is when Diani Beach is at its busiest and, in our view, at its best for a classic beach holiday. The sea sits near 28°C, the sand is white and the reef-sheltered water is calm. The short rains are tapering, and the hotels are decorated for Christmas. It also costs more than any other month, and the best properties sell out early. This guide covers the weather, festive pricing, named hotels, activities and logistics for December 2026.

Eating out
Seafood is the highlight: grilled kingfish, lobster, prawns in coconut sauce and fresh samosas. Typical beachfront restaurants charge KES 1,500-3,500 for a main (about USD 12-27), and a lobster dinner is more. Our Diani restaurant guide lists the places we recommend.
Getting to Diani
- Fly: Nairobi (JKIA or Wilson) to Ukunda (UKA) in about 70 minutes, from approximately USD 70-150 one way. The airport is 10 minutes from the beach
- Train: SGR Madaraka Express, Nairobi to Mombasa, about 5 hours, then Likoni ferry and a taxi, 1 to 1.5 hours in total (see our Nairobi to Mombasa train guide)
- Road: Mombasa to Diani is 35km, and the ferry can queue badly around Christmas. Allow extra time

December health and safety notes
Use mosquito repellent after dusk, because the short rains boost mosquito numbers. Check current health advice for Kenya before travel, and review the latest travel advisories in our Kenya news. Beach vendors are persistent but friendly, so a polite “no, asante” works. Never leave valuables on the sand.
Family and couples tips
Families do best at the big resorts, which run kids’ clubs, shallow pools and early dinner sittings. Couples often prefer the smaller southern properties, where evenings are calmer and rooms face the water. Reef-sheltered water is calm at high tide, but at low tide the sea retreats a long way, so plan swims and boat departures around the tide table that your hotel front desk can print.
Our verdict
December is expensive, busy and bright, and if you book early, it delivers one of East Africa’s best beach weeks. If you would rather save money and still get good weather, move your trip to late January or February, when rates drop and the kaskazi wind is at its steadiest.
