Christmas in Kenya 2026: What's Open, Where to Stay and What It Costs

Expect 31-32°C days and 28°C sea on the coast, and 24-26°C days with cool nights in Nairobi and the Masai Mara. Christmas in Kenya is a dry-season holiday: the short rains have mostly cleared, the roads are in good shape, and the beach resorts run at full capacity. It is also the most expensive fortnight of the year, so the decision is really about where the festive atmosphere is worth paying for. This page covers what is open, where Christmas actually feels like Christmas, named hotels with festive-week rates, restaurants doing a Christmas lunch or dinner, flight windows and weather. For a day-by-day route, see our Kenya Christmas itinerary; for month-wide conditions, see Kenya in December.

What Is Open on Christmas Day

Everything tourism-related runs. Safari lodges, beach resorts, game drives, dhow trips and airline schedules continue on 24, 25 and 26 December. KWS-managed parks and the Masai Mara reserve gates stay open, and the Mara’s entry fee is the higher July-to-December rate of approximately USD 200 per non-resident adult per day as of 2026, so confirm the current figure on the Kenya Wildlife Service website before you book.

What closes or slows down:

  • Banks and government offices shut on 25 and 26 December. Withdraw shillings and settle any cash payments by 24 December.
  • Public transport thins out. Matatus and long-distance buses are crowded on 22-24 December as Kenyans travel to their home areas, and fares rise by approximately 20-50 percent on popular routes.
  • Smaller shops and local restaurants in towns such as Mombasa, Malindi and Nakuru close for 25 December. Hotels and tourist-strip restaurants stay open.
  • Supermarkets (Carrefour, Naivas, Quickmart) usually open on Christmas Eve until early evening and reopen on 26 December; hours vary by branch.

If you are self-driving, note that Nairobi-to-coast and Nairobi-to-Nakuru roads carry heavy traffic on 23-24 December and 2-3 January. Our renting a car in Kenya guide covers deposits and insurance.

Where the Festive Atmosphere Actually Is

Diani Beach. This is the busiest festive strip in the country. The big resorts decorate, run Christmas Eve buffets, Christmas lunch with live music, and children’s programmes, and the beach bars along Diani Road keep late hours through to New Year. Expect 31°C days, gentle sea breezes and a mix of European, Kenyan and Gulf visitors. See our Diani Beach city guide for the layout.

Watamu and Malindi. Quieter and more Italian-flavoured, with Christmas lunches at beach hotels and a lively Boxing Day on the sands. Watamu works for snorkelling in the Marine National Park, which is typically clear in December.

Nairobi. Malls in Gigiri and Runda run festive markets and carol events through December, and hotel restaurants serve Christmas lunch. The city is calmer on 25 December itself. Our Nairobi in December guide lists events and daytime activities.

Safari camps. Camps in the Masai Mara conservancies and Laikipia hold a candlelit Christmas dinner under the stars, often a bush dinner with a set menu and a gift from the staff. It is more intimate than a resort Christmas, and the atmosphere comes from the setting, not decorations. Lamu is the quiet alternative: no cars, dhow lunches and a slow Christmas in Shela. See our Lamu stay guide.

Named Hotels and Festive-Week Rates

All prices below are approximately, per night, for the 24-27 December window as of 2026, and vary by room type and board. Festive supplements of roughly USD 50-150 per person are common and usually add a mandatory gala dinner, so ask whether the quoted rate includes it.

Restaurants Serving Christmas Dinner

Book every Christmas table by early December.

  • Carnivore Restaurant, Langata (Nairobi). The best-known Nairobi grill runs Christmas events with live entertainment. Budget approximately KES 4,000-6,000 per person as of 2026 and confirm the festive menu directly.
  • Fairmont The Norfolk (Nairobi). A set Christmas lunch in the hotel’s restaurants, typically priced from approximately KES 8,000 per person.
  • Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant (Diani). A coral cave restaurant that fills fast on 24-25 December. Main courses run from approximately KES 2,500 as of 2026; reserve ahead and consider the Christmas Eve slot, when the atmosphere is better.
  • Nomad Beach Bar and Restaurant (Diani). Beach tables with a seafood-led festive menu; open to non-residents.
  • Resort buffets. Diani Reef and Turtle Bay both run Christmas Eve and Christmas Day buffets for guests and often for day visitors; ask the front desk the price.

See our Diani restaurant guide for more beachfront options.

Flight Price Windows

December is the peak window for international fares to Nairobi (NBO) and Mombasa (MBA), driven by diaspora travel and European holiday demand. Approximate economy returns from London for 20 December to 3 January run from about GBP 750-1,100 as of 2026 when booked four to six months ahead, and from GBP 1,200-1,800 when booked inside eight weeks. Fares from Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Doha are similar in pattern. Departing on 17-19 December or returning on 5-8 January often lowers the fare by 15-30 percent. Domestic flights from Nairobi Wilson to Ukunda (Diani) or the Mara strips sell out around 22-24 December; our flights to Kenya guide lists carriers and airports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kenya open at Christmas?
Yes. National parks, safari lodges, beach resorts and most restaurants in Nairobi and on the coast operate normally on 24-26 December. Christmas Day (25 December) and Boxing Day (26 December) are public holidays, so banks, government offices and many small shops close, and matatu and bus services run reduced timetables.
How hot is Kenya at Christmas?
The coast runs about 31-32°C by day with sea temperatures around 28°C. Nairobi and the Masai Mara sit near 24-26°C by day and 13-16°C at night. December is dry from mid-month, although the Mara can still see around 80mm across the month.
How far ahead should we book Christmas in Kenya?
For 23 December to 2 January, book coast resorts and Masai Mara camps by June or July. Flights from Europe are cheapest when booked 4-6 months ahead and rise sharply in the final eight weeks.
Do people celebrate Christmas in Kenya?
Yes. Kenya is majority Christian, and Christmas is a major family holiday. Many Nairobi residents travel upcountry to their home villages, which empties parts of the city and fills coach stations on 22-24 December.
