Kenya New Year Itinerary 2027: NYE in the Mara, Then Amboseli and Diani

· 7 min read Itineraries
Safari tent interior with wooden floors, Kenya

Expect 25-27°C days in the Mara, 30°C at Amboseli and 32°C on the coast. Kenya in early January is one of the quietest and most reliable months for wildlife - the peak holiday crowd thins after January 2, rates drop, and the dry-season conditions that make for good game viewing hold through February. This 10-day itinerary routes a New Year trip combining the Masai Mara for NYE, Amboseli for Kilimanjaro sunrises in the first days of January, and Diani Beach for the coast leg.

For December conditions and month-specific detail, see our visiting Kenya in December guide. For January conditions, see visiting Kenya in January.

Why This Route for New Year

The core logic: spend New Year’s Eve in a safari camp, wake up January 1 on game drive, then slow down at the coast. This is the opposite of a party city NYE - quieter, more atmospheric, and for anyone who wants wildlife over fireworks, hard to beat.

Masai Mara for NYE: The Mara’s private conservancies allow night game drives that don’t run in the main reserve - a December 31 night game drive, returning to camp for midnight, is a genuinely distinctive way to close the year. Resident lion prides, elephant herds, and the Mara’s open plains are all present year-round.

Amboseli for January 1–3: Amboseli’s famous combination of elephants and Kilimanjaro views peaks in January when skies are clear and the mountain is consistently visible. It’s a 45-minute flight from the Mara via Wilson, and far less crowded than the Masai Mara in peak season.

Diani for the coast: Diani’s December–January weather is the best of the year: dry, warm (approximately 28–30°C), flat seas. Post–January 2 rates are substantially lower than Christmas week.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Days 1–2: Nairobi

Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). Book a private airport transfer in advance - New Year’s week traffic in Nairobi is heavy.

Day 1: Rest and orientation. Westlands and the Karen area have the most useful pre-departure services.

Day 2: Morning visit to Nairobi National Park via a Nairobi day tour - the only national park within a capital city, with lions, rhinos, and giraffes. Afternoon: Giraffe Centre in Karen, then David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery (11am visits, booking required). Dinner at a Westlands or Karen restaurant.

Evening, Day 2: Fly from Wilson Airport to the Masai Mara. Safarilink and AirKenya operate scheduled services to Mara airstrips (approximately 45 minutes, USD 130–220 one-way as of 2026). Arrive in time for a late game drive.

Days 3–5: Masai Mara (including New Year’s Eve)

Three nights covering December 29 to December 31. The Masai Mara in late December is dry and excellent for game viewing - the Great Migration has moved into Tanzania but the resident wildlife is substantial. Lion prides are active year-round, cheetah sightings are consistent, and elephant herds frequent the Mara River corridor.

New Year’s Eve (Day 5, December 31): Most quality camps host NYE dinners - a set dinner with Maasai cultural performance, bonfire, and (in conservancies) an optional night game drive departing around 10pm and returning for midnight. Confirm your camp’s arrangements at booking.

Recommended Masai Mara areas for NYE:

Private conservancies (Olare Motorogi, Naboisho, Ol Kinyei) allow off-road driving and night game drives. For NYE specifically, the conservancy camps’ small size means a genuinely intimate celebration rather than a resort dinner. Options include Kicheche Mara Camp, Ol Seki Hemingways Mara, and Sanctuary Olonana. From approximately USD 450–900 per person per night full-board as of 2026 (peak period rates).

Mara Triangle suits those wanting solid game viewing without the conservancy premium. Camps here do not permit night drives, but December 31 dinners at camps like Mara Serena Safari Lodge are well-organised. From approximately USD 280–500 per person per night as of 2026.

A hot air balloon flight over the Masai Mara makes a strong January 1 morning activity - arrange through your camp or via Masai Mara tours. Book at least one month ahead for the peak week; slots are limited.

Day 6: Mara to Amboseli via Wilson

Fly Mara airstrip to Wilson Airport, then connect to Amboseli (Ol Kilorok airstrip or Amboseli East). Total transfer Mara–Amboseli via Wilson is approximately 3–4 hours. Budget USD 200–350 per person for both legs as of 2026.

January 1 arrival in Amboseli means the first full day here is January 2 - and the elephants are undisturbed at daybreak. The late-afternoon flight on Day 6 allows a January 1 morning game drive in the Mara before departing.

Days 6–8: Amboseli (January 1–3)

Three nights in Amboseli. January is the clearest month for Kilimanjaro views - plan morning game drives for 6am, when the mountain is typically cloud-free. The Amboseli elephant herds are the largest in Kenya, and the swamp areas allow close observation from camp.

Accommodation options:

Mid-range: Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge (central Amboseli, solid elephant sightings from camp) and Kibo Safari Camp (tented camp with good value and consistent wildlife). From approximately USD 200–350 per person per night full-board as of 2026.

Luxury: Tortilis Camp and Ol Tukai Lodge are well-positioned for Kilimanjaro views. From approximately USD 450–700 per person per night as of 2026.

From January 3, rates across Amboseli typically drop 20–30% from the peak week rates - if your schedule allows arriving from January 3, the saving is meaningful.

Day 9: Amboseli to Diani Beach

Fly Amboseli → Wilson → Ukunda Airport (UKA) for Diani Beach. Total travel time is approximately 3–4 hours. Early departure allows an afternoon check-in and first beach afternoon.

Days 9–10: Diani Beach

Two nights (or three with a 10-night return). Diani in January is peak season: dry, calm seas, warm water (approximately 27°C). Rates drop noticeably from January 3 vs the Christmas week prices.

Accommodation options for January:

Mid-range: Diani Reef Beach Resort & Spa and Neptune Paradise offer solid facilities at mid-range rates (from approximately USD 150–250 per person per night including breakfast as of 2026).

Boutique: The Sands at Nomad is the consistent quality standout on the strip (from approximately USD 250–400 per person per night as of 2026).

Luxury/privacy: Almanara and Kinondo Kwetu (Galu Beach) are the best options for couples wanting seclusion. From approximately USD 400–700 per person per night as of 2026.

Activities from Diani: snorkelling at the Diani reef, Wasini Island and Kisite Marine Park day trip by boat, and glass-bottom kayaking.

For the full accommodation breakdown, see our Diani Beach hotels guide.

Day 10: Depart

Fly Ukunda (UKA) → Wilson → Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO). Allow a minimum 2-hour connection at Wilson if transiting through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is New Year's Eve good in the Masai Mara?
Yes - December 31 in the Masai Mara is excellent for wildlife and for a genuinely remote New Year experience. Game viewing is consistently good in late December (dry season, good grass cover, resident lions and cheetah active), and many camps host NYE dinners with bonfires and Maasai cultural performances. The experience is quiet compared to city celebrations - expect a small group at your lodge rather than a party. Book by September at the latest for Christmas-New Year week, as quality camps fill entirely.
What is Amboseli like in January?
January is one of the best months to visit Amboseli. The short rains end by late November, leaving skies consistently clear - and Kilimanjaro is most reliably visible in December and January. Elephant herds are large and active around the Amboseli swamps. There's no migration here, but the combination of elephants, big sky, and Kilimanjaro backdrop in clear January light makes Amboseli a compelling alternative to a third Masai Mara night.
Do lodge rates drop after New Year in Kenya?
Yes - most lodges apply peak season rates from approximately December 20 to January 2, then revert to high season or shoulder rates from January 3. The saving can be significant: a mid-range Masai Mara camp might charge USD 400–450 per person per night in the peak window and USD 280–350 from January 3. If your schedule allows even a single day shift, flying in January 3 or later delivers real savings.
