The Masai Mara is Kenya’s most visited wildlife destination - and for good reason. The combination of the Big Five, open grassland visibility, and the annual Great Migration river crossings makes it the benchmark African safari experience. Choosing the right tour format depends on your budget, available days, and what you want to prioritise.
Types of Masai Mara Tours
Game Drives
The standard Masai Mara experience. Open-sided 4WD vehicles (typically Toyota Land Cruisers or Land Rovers) with pop-up roofs give unobstructed views and allow guides to navigate off-road. Most packages include morning and afternoon drives (approximately 6–10am and 4–7pm), which is when predators are most active.
Morning drives consistently outperform afternoon drives for cat sightings - lions and cheetahs are active at dawn before the heat. Leopard sightings are less predictable but more frequent in the Mara Triangle section of the reserve.
Full-day drives with a packed lunch allow you to stay out during the midday period - useful for following wildlife events and finding kills. Most camps offer this on request.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris
A dawn balloon flight above the Mara is one of Kenya’s signature experiences - approximately one hour at treetop height watching the landscape unfold below. The silence, scale, and perspective of wildlife movement is genuinely different from a game drive. Prices run approximately USD 420–500 per person, including a bush breakfast in the field. Walking Safaris
Available in the Mara conservancies (not inside the National Reserve). A guided walk with an armed ranger and Maasai guide gives a completely different ecological engagement - tracking, reading signs, understanding plant use. Walking safaris are typically 2–3 hours in the morning. Not primarily for game sighting (predators avoid people on foot) but for learning the ecosystem at ground level.

Night Game Drives

Cultural Village Visits

Quality varies significantly - better operators work directly with specific villages rather than tourism show operations.

Nairobi–Mara Combinations

Mara + Amboseli or Lake Nakuru
Wildlife circuit combinations are efficient for time-limited travellers. Amboseli (known for elephant herds under Kilimanjaro) pairs well with the Mara on a 7-day itinerary. Day Tours from Nairobi
Technically possible but not recommended. The 5–6 hour road journey each way leaves only 3–4 hours in the reserve. Fly-in day trips are available through some operators at approximately USD 550–750 per person (including the flight and game drive), which is a more useful experience. Booking Logistics
What’s typically included: Ground/air transfer, accommodation, all meals (full board), twice-daily game drives, park fees, and guiding. Balloon safaris, cultural visits, and alcohol are usually priced separately.
Booking lead time: July–September (peak/Migration) requires 3–6 months advance booking for quality camps. January–February (calving season) books up 2–3 months ahead. Low season (April–May) is bookable with 2–4 weeks’ notice.
